Can anyone help me get my 2500K past 4.1Ghz!? (ASRock Extreme4 Gen3) [Solved - Motherboard BIOS is buggy!] - Page 15

ok..2-3 things
set vtt to 1.12-1.15
set cpu pll to 1.835
raise your offset until you're getting 1.37v
set LLC to level 2 or 1
ok..that's 4 things
try it..also..dram @ 1.55 just for peace of mind

I found with the ex3 asrock..ONLY level 1 LLC did anything

I have been keeping my eye on here but i haven't really thought of anything more than what has been posted but if you have come this far with no success, then i would strongly think it was the mobo, or are overlooking something.
Is there anyway you can cross test the mobo with a friend ? or even get a multimeter out.

i have tried that already... ive found with my board it only likes llc 4 or 5, sometimes 3. when i managed to get 4.2Ghz to boot it would never work with llc 1 or 2....

i know man its why i tried to close this thread, at least temporarily. people keep suggesting the same stuff over and over. not having a go at anyone but i just realised thats when i'd exhuasted everyones ideas. i think people are imagining im some kind of noob or something which is really frustrating lol.... im just stuck with a dud bit of hardware and im just tryna figure out which thing it is - probly the cpu but yeh the mobo still could be the issue. i dont have anyone i can swap hardware with or anything like that. im a pc gamer, what do i need friends for? haha....

ive settled for what ive got really and its not bugging me bad or anything anymore. but im still hopeful i can get more out of this cpu at some point. so Thanks again everyone for the help thumb.gif I'll be trying the new BIOS whenever it comes out and see if i get anymore luck...

I feel u man, it must be really annoying, the reason why i think its the mobo and not cpu is if it was cpu u would be able to post at 4.2 if you have 4.1 stable (at same volts as 41 but with bsod soon after booting). If you're max multi for that chip was 42 then u would have signs of instability at 41 but since youre stable at 4.1 with low volts and low temps i highly doubt its the cpu unless u really have hit its max which is unlikely.

Clear CMOS - Important step.
Only change these pages and leave everything else on default: Pics (Click to show)
450
450
CPU Ratio - Manual - 45 (skip to 46 if 45 doesn't work)
Internal PLL Overvoltage - Disabled. (only enable it if it doesn't boot into windows)
Speedstep - Enabled
Turbo Boost - Manual
Long & short duration - 250
Core current - 250
Spread spectrum - Disabled
CPU Core voltage - Manual - 1.4v
LLC level - 2
PLL Voltage - 1.75v
VTT Voltage - 1.115 (or thereabouts)
Those are the only changes you should make after clearing CMOS. Obviously set your boot priority accordingly and the RAM to it's stock settings which includes the timings, voltage and frequency. Please report back when you have tried that and let us know the outcome of the results. Be sure to use Prime blend for stress testing purposes.
Good luck.

hey man i tried it 45/46 with those settings, and then with pll over voltage enabled. just wouldn't post any of those times frown.gif could be the motherboard but i reckon i probably just got a dud cpu...

That's really strange. Try again but this time disconnect all your sata ports and peripherals except for the keyboard and mouse (While you're at it, try them in a different USB port).

Also try this, it may be a different board but BIOS settings are pretty much the same:

At 4.7GHz and higher my board kept failing to post and hanging on code 0x70 (southbridge DXE initialization). The fix is to disable Intel visualization technology and the IGD multi-monitor option in the UEFI. That fixed my problem and the board posts every time now.

yeh i know what you mean. i would expect the mobo to at least post when i set higher than 4.2Ghz. 4.1Ghz is pefectly stable at low volts... its strange, it just absolutely refuses to post above 4.2Ghz. i am pretty suspicious about the mobo...

Thats a point, i see where you're going with that, while you're at it you might aswell double check cables and make sure the main rails are not too close to the cpu or ram as they can cause noise which could be a factor and maybe check the screws and make sure one isnt at an angle close enough to create a short at them volts. Might aswell check the motherboard cpu pins aswell lol
Go over it with a fine tooth combe, something is creating this strange anomoly.

i actually rebuilt the whole computer the other day and checked all this stuff, then took the bios battery out for 15 minutes and tried again as someone suggested before but i didnt think to consider the placement of the power lines from the psu. possible they could be causing some interferance i guess. im just about to go through with what munaim1 suggested so i will be sure to check that to. will report back in a little while guys. thanks smile.gif

OK im back guys and im a happy man! it turns out that the setting that was screwing everything was "IGD multi-monitor", visualization didn't seem to matter. i tried all of the presets in the bios and the highest one is 4.8Ghz - POST'ed first time!! i haven't tried booting into the operating system with these overclocks yet but im now gonna spend the night messing with overclocks biggrin.gif man that feels so good to know that i can potentialy get a lot more out of this upgrade like i was originally hoping! Munaim1 you are awesome! I'd pretty much just given up on this...

So i guess this is case solved and hopefully this will help some people in future. I hope you'll add a reference to this in you're overclocking guide munaim1? There must be quite a few others that dont realise this has limited them! Thanks a lot everyone, your efforts are much appreciated thumb.gifthumb.gifthumb.gif
