Cheap Tablet for Notes Taking - Page 3

That story about X220s failing a lot is news to me, and seeing how Thinkpads are the top rated business laptops (by corporate customers) for the past 16 quarters.. well anyways. Of the people I know in school, the number of people who drop/spill a drink/ get their laptop stolen far outnumbers the amount of people whose laptops die.

Windows 8 Dev Preview is x86 only. Microsoft might release the ARM-compatible Windows 8, but it'll probably be as a beta. For $200, perhaps Kindle Fire like others said, but the 8GB is a bit limiting (especially if you hope to put W8 on it eventually). HP Touchpad 16GB is a good choice, but it's hard to say if Windows 8 will get run on it, if it'll be fast enough with a single core, etc.

I didn't mean the X220, just every other convertible tablet I've seen has failed miserably. There are a lot of Lenovo convertible tablets here at Tech that simply do NOT hold up to general use, excluding abuse or misuse. They are NOT being mistreated (some are, but not the majority). They suck. Convertible tablets seem to be the worst of both worlds.

I don't need Windows on my tablet....I just need something that can replace my notebooks.

What exactly do you mean by "they suck"? A friend of mine has an HP convertible tablet of those (tm2 versions) and it has been great for him, and has lasted since we started university three years ago. He also plays some games on it since it has switchable ATI graphics.

He also carries it to uni every single day, and uses it in all of his classes.

Sucks as in 13/15 people I know with one had Mobo failures within 18 months, 15/15 within 24 months. HDD's went out quickly. 14/15 screens broke within 15 months, the last one broke within 18 months. The longest battery life of the bunch after a year was mine, and it was under 30 minutes from a full, fresh charge with VERY limited usage. 30 minutes of battery life with no streaming, low brightness, no bluetooth. 15/15 are completely trashed within 24 months of purchase. Mine lasted the longest. I constantly defragged the HDD, I did fresh installs of Windows7 MINIMUM every semester. I properly cycled my battery, never dropped it, never spilled anything on it, disassembled it for cleaning every 6 months. My Macbook Pro is over 18 months old and is in perfect shape. Besides a few scratches, it functions perfectly, has great battery life, and I haven't defragged or done a fresh install except for upgrading OS's.

While ALL convertible tablets suck, HP in general sucks as well. My brother worked at a Mac Authorized Retailer (and general computer repair store) for a few months and he said over half of the computers in for repair were HP's. They really are the worst of the worst. I will never own another HP again.

7" or 10" screen? I'd reiterate Kindle Fire for a 7", really fast. HP Touchpad is probably the best 10" in the price range, you can put Android on it, and it can OC to like 1.6ghz (single-core).

As for the note-taking apps: https://market.android.com/details?id=com.write.Quill
https://market.android.com/details?id=udk.android.reader&feature=top-paid
https://market.android.com/details?id=cn.wps.moffice_eng&feature=search_result#?t=W251bGwsMSwxLDEsImNuLndwcy5tb2ZmaWNlX2VuZyJd

With those 3 you can definitely view/annotate PDFs, view/edit powerpoints (might need to export to PDF to annotate), and take notes.

I can't find an HP Touchpad for anywhere near $200. $325 is about the cheapest I could find.

I actually have a rooted Nook Color and have been playing around with a few handwritten note-taking apps but not too much recently. I love using the Nook Color and the touch screen is great when writing with just a finger but would probably be much better with a stylus. I'll try some of the apps that have been suggested here and get back to you later in the day with how it does when using a finger. You can probably find one for pretty cheap on craigslist.

Oh. Try eBay then, I've seen some for $225, used. $325 is a ripoff, iPad 1 costs about the same used. Not sure if you want to get one used. I'm kind of shocked, like 400,000 sold for $100 (16gb) or $150 (32gb) in that firesale, jeeeez why is there so much demand lol.

Well, it's a tough call. I'd still say HP Touchpad for a cheap 10" (~$225). Nook Color might be the best option for something cheaper, at $150 for a certified pre-owned, and you can root it etc. NOVO7 looks really sketchy - their contact link on their website is an email! Support is a how-to on updating the firmware. And it's a Chinese company, looks like a big no.
