Update: There seem to be some questions about the sourcing and completeness of Engadget's claims. Apple states in its iBooks Author license that all works created through the software to be offered for sale can only be sold through Apple. But it appears that authors may be able to use other tools to offer those same titles on other platforms on marketplaces as long as they do not use iBooks Author to create the files. As TechCrunch notes, the output of iBooks Author is based on ePub but not technically in the ePub format, so those files likely would not be compatible with platforms other than iBooks anyway.

True if you use their tools.

More censorship, lock-in, and draconian DRM from Apple. Shocking.

Such a horrible horrible company.

And before being branded a 'fanboy', I only own an iPad but most likely won't be buying any Apple products anytime soon.

Okay, so you are going to start paying microsoft when you send a word document to someone?

How about adobe when you send a PDF.

and those family pictures you touched up in Photoshop, better get the payment ready.

It's YOUR FILE. You should be 100% free to do what you want with it.

What are yo talking about? Why would you pay Microsoft per word document sent somewhere or adobe or any other company? How does that have any relevance?

I don't see what the problem is? Don't like it sell it on another store... Pretty simple. Also how do you think publishers usually work... Its an exclusivity contract in exchange for a huge audience.

This is just ridiculous, Apple needs to stop trying to kill competition, someone is going to publish a book and be screwed over because they didn't read everything correctly

I don't have to pay Apple for sending the book file. Have you read the actual EULA from Apple? If you offer it for free you can distribute it by any available means. Only when you want to sell it for a profit you have to do so through Apple. Being the owner you can still send it anywhere you like. Don't like it? Sell it using a different file using a different store.

Technically you do pay...You have to buy the Office and Adobe apps. I don't know much of anything about this iBooks Author software, but the Mac App Store says it is free. if it is free software then they can attach what rules they want to it. Apple isn't under any obligation to the user.

Use Apple Software to write your book, then you must use the Apple store to sell your Apple file "Book".

So use any other available writing software, sell everywhere else. I don't see the issue.

They just want to keep all Apple within Apple.
