Is there any difference between having 2*512 and 1GB on my Mobo?

I have the chance to exchange my 2*512 dual channel kit with someone coz my mobo doesn't support dual channel and his does.
he has a 1 stick 1 GB.

Of course he will take advantage of my 2*512 but am I gonna see any difference in any ways ?

mobo is in sig.

Generally 512 MB DIMMs have tighter timings than 1 GB sticks, so you may see a bit of a loss of performance from that.

wow
I didn't expect that.
I always hear people say get 2*1GB not 4*512mb coz of latency issues.
I know this is different.... but thanks for the info

Yeah check out the timings on yours and his and decide which is better.

I bet 2x 512MB have tighter timings IMO

That particular issue has more to do with the memory controller, and it often falls in favor of 2 DIMMs instead of 4 even though the timings on the DIMMs usually favors the 512 MB sticks.

One thing that would be useful with having a 1GB stick is that since your motherboard is limited to 3 DIMM slots it would mean at a later date you could get another matching stick and upgrade to 2GB

This is the same thing I'm thinking about right now. My uncle needs new memory, so I need to figure out for him. Is it better to buy 2x512 DDR2 or just one module of 1GB?
