Any more 6950 unlockable references out there?

Thread Starter
I'm looking to purchase a 6950 to hold me over till the 7950. But I want a 6950 that can be unlocked. Currently have a GTX 550TI which the driver keeps crashing on a fresh install almost every 15 minutes. Never had driver problems with AMD plus my board only does crossfire not sli.

I want to get the 6950 cause I'm still within my return period for micro center to which I return this which I paid 140 for, buy a 6950 and when the 7950 comes out upgrade to that, aka bunny hopping the payments.

In order to do this the card HAS to be new and purchased from a store that allows returns. Microcenter doesn't sell the 6950 anymore only 6970. Of course the 6950 should be cheaper than the 6970 otherwise there would be no point in going with it.

Worse case scenario if I can't find a 6950 that can be unlocked and returned within the return policy I'll rely on igp for a while while I save up I guess.

Bought two of these last week for my wife's new rig. They are 100% reference V1 designs and unlock / overclock very well.

VisionTek reference as well...albeit a little pricey:

This is probably the best bet to unclock if you can find one.

Sorry Ken1649 , but BEST BET would be the SAPPhIRE TOXIC thumb.gif (we're @ 85%+ successful unlocks in my Toxic Club) but he's more likely to find your ASUS card in stock somewhere ... Personally I'd suggest he looks at the MSI PE/OC TwinFrozrIII 2GB edition card. As a last resort and for the budget conscious I'd suggest the Sapphire DIRT3 eidition card. ALL of these are cheaper than that last overpriced batch of old Reference card stock TigerDirect is ripping people off on. wink.gif and they all have varying success rates of unlocking to a 6970.

Just to inform, it looks like the Sapphire HD6950 Dirt Edition is no longer unlockable. All of the recent reviews on Amazon and Newegg are by people saying they couldn't unlock. One reviewer on Newegg said he called tech support at Sapphire, and they told him the unlocking feature is no longer available. Link

I got mine a couple months ago, and it unlocked fine. Buyer beware I suppose.

The ONLY way they can KNOW it won't unlock is if they either KNOW they are using 100% Laser cut GPU's which I can't see them doing ... or they modified the card and eliminated the DUAL BIOS either removed the actual BIOS chip or removed the Dual Bios Switch , which I ALSO can't see them doing. wth.gif sooo hmmmmm headscratch.gif

Plus who's to say that you don't get a card from OLD STOCK if you order one ... and it's pre-this Claim ... further I can't see anyone at Sapphire Tech Support saying ANYTHING about the unlocking feature to a Customer over the phone ... they just wouldn't do this for some obvious reasons, so I call BS on that NewEgg reviewer.

But Long story short ... the HD-6950's are on their last days anyways IMO ... many have run out of stock and manufacturers aren't making anymore and have now shifted gears to producing the 7xxx series cards. IT's going to get harder and harder to find a quality NEW HD-6950 out in the retail/wholesale market, and most likely people will need to look at USED cards as options anyways.

Yea, I agree. I just noticed a trend of the latest comments all not being able to unlock. It could just be random.
