Question on 570 vs 580

Thread Starter
So, I'm building my new dream machine, and I'm wondering if it is better to go with a 570 in sli, or to buy a 580, with the intent to go sli with it in the next month or two. I'm trying to future proof as much as I can , realizing that nothing is future proof. So is it worth it to spend a bit more money and go with the 580's or no, I'm looking atp laying in 1980x1020 atm, with the intenet of using nvidia surround in the future. Thanks

If you're looking to go surround, I'd get a 3GB 580 now, and upgrade when you can.

That's just me.

Get a 7970 instead.

But if you must, the GTX 570 is much more cost-effective but gets VRAM limited. The GTX 580 only has 256MB more VRAM so it's very possible for the GTX 580 to run into similar limitations. GTX 570 SLI is the better buy IMO -- GTX 580s are still much more expensive than they should be. GTX 580 3GB is a better choice but the price is outrageous when it's so close to the 7970.

I was looking at the 7970, but I'm really wanting to get away from AMD graphics cards, try something new and go with NVIDIA
post #5 of 14
1. I believ you mean 1920x1080.

2. If you plan on going 3D surround in the future I believe 1.5GB of VRAM won't be enough. therefore, I think a 7970 would be better.

If you want to spend a little less you may want to see how the 7950 performs when in comes out on the 30th, this month.

edit: Also, I believe there is a 2.5 GB GTX 570, you could SLI those and be safe. smile.gif

If you can wait 1 or 2 month, why dont wait and take a look at the 600 series incoming...
otherwise, id go with gtx580, and SLI in future

Hmmm do you think a 570 could tide me over with playing bf3 on mostly ultra settings until the 6xx series comes out?
Grab a 3gb VRAM GTX 580 for now and go SLI later. Since VRAM does not add up from both cards you can pick up a 1.5GB later and have your 3GB VRAM anyway for 3D.

Never owned a 570. Yet from what I have been reading (since I wanted to build a really nice PC for my wife) the 570 should be enough.

http://www.geforce.com/Optimize/OPS/Battlefield-3-NVIDIA-GeForce-GTX-570-OPS

That is what they have listed. Yet if you look at the test system it is not that great. So with your machine you may get more. Cannot say for sure since I do not know the specs of your intended build.
