Looking for a 50-55" TV

Thread Starter
Don't care about 3D. Don't care about 120Hz. Just looking for a replacement for our 60" DLP that's finally crapping out. Don't know too much about the offerings in this size segment.

Don't really have brand loyalty, though my smaller 27" LCD TV is Samsung, along with my monitor.

No specific budget, though not looking for advanced features, and hence the price should reflect this.

Inputs desired: HDMI (3 or more), RCA or composite.

Don't care about speakers--will go through a receiver.

Any ideas on quality or preferred types are appreciated! TIA OCN!

Plasma, LCD, or LED? And what is your max budget? I have a few suggestions for you.

Thanks.

I'm still shying away from plasma, only because of the historical (albeit probably fixed) issues of image burn-in.

LCD or LED, doesn't matter so long as the quality difference is justified by a reasonable price.

Max budget...well, I guess said that I didn't have a budget, but in retrospect, I'd like to keep things at $1k or below. Not a big deal if it's more than that, I think it's tough to price 50-55" TV's for 1k, but I'd like to if possible.

Thanks!

Have you looked into a replacement bulb for your DLP? They're usually around $100-200 or so, and that's usually what goes out in DLP sets.

If you still want to buy a new one, I'd be looking at a plasma. LED and LCD still don't compare to plasma. I've got a 2011 model Samsung 50", and while it does still have a burn in problem, its only when you have a static image (like a web browser) open on it for too long. And it does go away after a few minutes of playing some video on it.

Alas, if only it were a bulb problem... We got stuck with an old Toshiba Mitsubishi DLP that has been plagued with circuit board problems. Unfortunately it's a well-known problem (and also out of warranty). I did replace the affected capacitors on the board before, but it's giving out again. frown.gif

So current plasma tech doesn't suffer from the permanent burn-in? That's good to hear. In that case, I'm fine with considering plasma too. I don't plan on leaving the TV on for long periods of time anyway, and probably not with a static image anyway.

Also, I forgot to mention--1080p please. biggrin.gif

That was one symptom that we would see on a very slight occasion--maybe all of 2 times. But what happens is the TV doesn't power on after you turn it off, and along with the failure to turn on is the rapidly blinking green light on the front panel of the TV (a blinking pattern which, oddly enough, is not addressed anywhere in the user troubleshooting section of the manual).

Before it died, there was a lot of reddish wash in-and-out (like if you ever watched old-school analog antenna TV, and the tuner wasn't quite right).

Truth be told, I'm glad it's finally broken again and the gf and I have decided to get rid of it. I hated that thing...

Here's the TV I just got. Amazing. Plasma has best image quality...and people say they use more power, eh?

The Estimated bill, per year, is 23$...if used for 5 hours, 365 days a year. I'd say that's PRETTY AMAZING.

Ignore the 3D. You can get the S30 for 100$ less and no 3D, but it has a different panel and anti-glare coating is removed. I'd say it's work it for deeper blacks & anti-glare. I did, and I never plan to use the 3D function.

One of the most amazing things I've ever seen once calibrated as well. People are just stunned by it, those who bought cheap generic LG's, or Sony TV's, Samsung competes decently, but it's black levels are still to high.

The ST30...for 900$, what I paid, is fricking an amazing 50 inch TV. The quality, no jutter, smooth playback. It's nuts. You can see the pores in peoples skin, hairs in their noses, ect.
