VOIP convenience

Thread Starter
Hello everyone,

I heard a lot about VOIP and about convenience over traditional systems so I was wondering if anyone could help me clarify advantages of this systems? (Im no expert at all)
Looking a provider in the NY area so I met this site http://www.embracecortel.com/technology/voip-ip-telephony/voip-phone-systems/
What do you think?
For example, I think you'd need to change your telephone number (or so I heard).

Thanks in advance!

VOIP systems have their advantages. It all depends on what your needs are really. You'll have to be more specific about what it is you need from your phone system though.

Make a new thread in the correct section and we'll be glad to advise as best we can.

This would be the closest thing we have to a correct section for this type of question.

Certainly need more information on the uses that you need it for. If it's just residential use, I can't see it being anymore useful than your normal lan line.

However, I've noticed more and more businesses are moving towards VOIP if they have the network for it. I'm also not sure how it's done for residential vs company, but I know we didn't not have to change our numbers (as a company) when we moved over to the new VOIP system.

I'd jsut like to reduce communications bills while keepin a good quality service.

In some cases you need to change your phone number, not all. The thing you need to make sure of is that you retain 911 server. This tends to be dropped when you go with smaller VoIP company. I think Vonage has 911 servers, Google Voice; I'm not sure. It's not in Canada.

Depending on your deployment you could use something like http://www.flowroute.com

It would be good if you had an asterisk deployment or simply wanted to use a softphone (such as X-Lite).
They also provide 911 capabilities.
