My experience from SLI GTX570s to single 7970 in BF3 - Page 10

Everything set to ultra
High Post AA
No differed AA
HBAO on
Vysnc on
With these setting my SLI setup gets 59-60 frames on every map. It almost never dips below 59-60. Its butter smooth. The only thing I do not like is the noise. My cards are right on top of each other which in turn creates alot of heat. I would love to get a single card that can do the samething my SLI setup is doing in BF3. Can a single 7970 do this? Can you run with vysnc on for a bit and see what type of frames and dips you are getting? Because as I said, SLI in BF3 for me is butter smooth no dip really at all. But the noise :-(
Thanks....

On my unlocked 6950 @ 880/1375 (virtually 6970) I get 56-60 FPS on the same settings as you, apart from v-sync and my resolution being 1920x1080. I get occasional dips but so far I haven't noticed them because of game-play, only by looking at the counter. I did have one big stutter for about 6 seconds but that was the CPU according to my FPS counter, and soon that will be overclocked. So going by this a 79xx will do the trick.

Also my V-RAM usage usually ends up ~1,900 --> 2070MB. Hope this helps.

Good catch, I imagine it's even worse if your pushing your vram limit and have no additional system ram to use.

Here is my running log for today.
Minimum free system RAM was 377MB.

Nonetheless, why would you exclude frame-times if that's where the gains (if any) would truly manifest? That not only renders the results meaningless (i.e. it doesn't tell us anything the developers haven't already told us), but also makes the analysis incomplete.

How can I make sense of these frame-time benches FRAP's outputs?
Or, here I will upload the bench for you to look over for oddities.
This is a minute from the start of the Caspian round at 4xMSAA I mentioned earlier.

bf3 2012-01-22 10-54-02-41 frametimes.csv 65k .csv file

This is good.

The time column is essentially the timestamp of each frame. For example, the timestamp of 13.926ms for frame 2 means that was the time it took to render. The timestamp of 29.319ms for frame 3 means frame 3 took 15.393ms (29.319 - 13.926) to render.

In analyzing the frame-time or render time for each frame, it is important to focus on unusually large frame times that intersperse smaller ones. For example, a 60ms frame interspersed among a long series of ~15ms frames might be indicative of hitching or stuttering.

In your series, the longest frame was somewhere about 33ms which constitutes an FPS of ~31 at that precise moment. This occurred at frame 624; the previous frame took 17.577ms (56.89 FPS) and the next frame took 10.843ms (92 FPS at that moment).

This means that for a single frame you were receiving the equivalent of 30ish FPS in between much smoother frametimes. This might indicate a hitch or stutter; the only way to verify if it's from VRAM is to test the same run (ceteris paribus except GPU) with a 2.5GB version of your card.

a neat trick i found for getting great performance with AA is to use the "SMAA injector" with medium post AA and you get 4X MSAA quality with way less resource hogging, it's what i'm using now smile.gif

You should set SMAA to "Ultra" and eliminate FXAA. SMAA + FXAA will degrade image quality.

And actually, SMAA is superior to MSAA (in BF3 at least) because it takes care of aliasing on objects that are interacting with light.

Why aren't these options built in to the drivers? It would be nice to have the option to choose a more optimized AA method when running a beast game that eats computers for lunch.

Your problem were bad drivers. In 64 player map, I start at 55 fps, and during heavy load, lowest it drops is 40-45 all on max settings with gtx 580.
