Back in the OC scene. Have a question

post #1 of 31
Thread Starter
Good day everyone,

A few years ago I was very active in the OC scene and pushed my rig to the maximum.
After that time I started to travel alot so I switched to Laptops / Laptop gaming.
Now I want to get myself a new machine again.
I will mainly use it for gaming/videoediting and ofcourse for my work.
I have unlimited amount of money to spend but I really hate to overkill a setup.

So I will start low and try to involve the old stuff I still have:

What I still have:
-750 Watt power supply
-Nvidia GTX 275 (lolololol)
-An old crappy mainboard
-An old crappy AMD Phenom x3 Black edition (the one where you could unlock the 4th core...)

What I will change in my rig:
-AMD Phenom x3 BE -> AMD Phenom x6 1100T
-Mainboard -> Here is where I need help with

What I will also need to buy:
RAM -> I was thinking about 2x4 GB G.Skill
Cooling -> Watercooling or Aircooling... I don't care neither I don't really new what will be better

What I will improve in the future:
GTX 275 -> Whatever I feel to buy smile.gif

That was it,

Hope you can give me some ideas about what I should go for... I would like to stay with AMD but yeah I basically have no idea what else is good nowadays =/

Hey there mate smile.gif

It'd really help if you gave us a budget to go by.

For the beginning I think I would like to invest around 500 $ for processor/mainboard/ and invest the rest for new cooling etc.
Anyways I am nearly unlimited with my budget so if the improvement is worth it I could easily go up.
I have some plans for a new project I would like to start once my computer is running again.
For now I don't need fancy graphics and overpriced Intel processors so I will slowly start to improve my basic build until I have all the hardware for my big project smile.gif

Are Gigabyte Motherboards really good to go for?
I heard Asrock made some big improvements over the last years.
So I was also thinking about a Asrock extreme4 for later build improvements but not sure.
I really lost track in the motherboard jungle biggrin.gif

Thanks for the tips so far.

Thanks for the tips so far.

The 990FX Extreme4 is a solid board and is well worth the money (although a tad ugly biggrin.gif).

Gigabyte boards are just as reliable as ASUS thumb.gif

If you're wanting to stick with AMD that's fine, but if you want the best bang for your buck or best in general you want to be looking at Intel.

2500K (4 Cores)
2600K (8 Core 4 Physical / 4 Logical) - HyperThreading

Motherboards - Asus Maximus IV Extreme
- ASRock Gene3 Extreme 4
- Gigabyte Z68XP-UD3P
- Asus P67Pro

As for the AMD side, the first post has you covered. Also might check out the Crosshair V Formula board from Asus.

1. For pure gaming the 2500K would be a better bet, although at higher resolutions games become more GPU-dependent.
2. The Crosshair V would be overkill for the OP since it offers a bunch of features he might not even use.
