Hey guys, I have really debated on doing this for awhile, and I am strongly tempted to do this, but I have a corsair H50, Other than the cooler head being REALLY fat, could I still do this? I am thinking its probably just the same thing. I am not too crazy, I'm not gonna take my IHS off but I will lap my H50, is this something I could consider attempting???

I have read this whole thread, and I understand the risks but I dont have any reason to think that a H50 head is any different shape than the H70, which you guys says work. So has anyone done this, can I get some information before I buy a new CPU cooler and remove my H50 and follow through with this?? Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

Newegg doesn't deliver to South Africa so I don't bother checking there at all ... redface.gif

Thanks for the frozenCPU idea ... I can't remember if they do the SA thing ... but will double check ! thumb.gif

It should have the same mounting diameter as the 620... Should fit. Just make sure you have enough room under the card since that H50 has quite a tall head to it...

it will work, the only thing you have to worry about is mounting and clearance.

As far as removing the IHS goes, are there definitely no negative consequences of the die coming into direct contact with the cooler head? What about the transistors around the die that I keep hearing will get shorted out easily? What if the cooler head accidentally bumps them or something? You're screwed?

And I assume that this only applies to when the card is actually running and has power.. I guess that touching them during the install wouldn't be bad as long as you didn't physically destroy them. Right?

And, isn't the space between the top of the die and the bottom of the IHS there for a reason?

Yea, only if its on or you freaking karate chop off some of the transistors its completely fine. AMD has been running their chips without an IHS since like the beginning of time. Also, laptops don't have IHS's unless its like the GTX560 570 580. Your fine. Just use your head, they're delicate.

Any scratch or mark on the transistors can kill them, so just don't touch them.
The gap between the die and IHS is probably a margin of error allowance in the production chain. Lapping it so it sits on the die with less TIM is safe and will reduce temp depending on the production error.

I did the 620 to my GTX470, working on getting a log up as I ran into an issue keeping the stock heat spreader, I used the zip tie method, will get my pics in to join the club.

Retaining the shroud is hit or miss. I did with both my cards but it took planning and luck.
