Second it's recommended to not spread the thermal interface material as you have, the best method is a single dot of grain of rice to pea sized in the center of the GPU's integrated heat spreader. Manually spreading it as you've done will introduce air bubbles.

I thought of your first suggestion before I finished. I see how this may cause the heat to compound as it's being moved back onto the PCB it originated from. If I flipped the fans around (side panel air pulling cool air in, radiator fans pushing or pulling to the front, and the front fans pulling), wouldn't there be little way to ensure that cool air is getting to the radiators? I would only have one side fan feeding cool air into the case rather than two, as my priority was to cool the radiators first. I did mine this way for that reason, as I figured the rest of the card is probably very robust and can take it considering how much it has taken air cooled. I'll flip things around and look at temps over some time and see if anything changes.

As for the thermal compound, I didn't know of. I use a credit card to flatten it over the IHS. Kindof gonna be a b*tch to remove all this stuff to re-do the compound lol. If temps become a problem, this will be the first thing I change. Thanks for the feedback.

I feel really dumb, but I just got a GTX 480 coming, and am thinking of doing this mod soon. How do you get the ends of the zip ties off to use to clamp the ties down once it's put through the holes?

Can you cut and pop off the end somehow?

Edit: I'm dumb as hell. You can just cut the end off and use it on another cable..

Yea just cut the ties on the top of the PCB once you tighten them up with the other zipties. Make sure you don't accidentally knock something off the top of the PCB too...

Lapp the 620 cooler. You saw the pictures on the previous page of lapping it? It'll give you a good 5C+ drop in temps easily. Get some new thin paste too for it, I recommend MX2 or MX4.

Its the best mod for your GPU forsure! Dwood makes brackets with 92mm fan hookups, you could pick one of those up cheap and ditch the zipties. People are really satisfied with the brackets and I'd recommend it, even though I don't have one. thumb.gif

You won't regret this mod! This is quite possibly the best ~$50 you'll spend on any type of cooling for your pc.
I agree, its well worth doing but be warned, it puts you off upgrading because any cooler on a new card is going to be louder not matter how quiet its supposed to be. Of course the mod should be universal to most graphics cards so chances are you can do it to any card you own.

We are still waiting for confirmation about the compatibility for the GTX 670 but im sure its do-able!! thumb.gif

Received my bracket today for reference 580 with fan mount for the antec 620. Thank you Dwood!!

I am having difficulty finding a quality 92mm fan. No computer stores in my area carry them, I have to purchase online.

Is there a general consensus on good (CFM) and quiet (dBa) 92mm fans?

I can't tell what is marketing hype and what actually works. rolleyes.gif

Who has had good experience with Antec, Cooler Master, SilenX, Scythe, Noiseblocker, Coolink, Evercool?

Scythe, Antec, and Cooler Master keep coming up, but I would like to get feedback from those who have actually used them for "The Mod".

Much appreciated!biggrin.gif

i made my trial about 4 months ago but that's the first time to know about that thread here , i used couple of H60 to cool my SLI 2X 570s , and the temps are really great
besides i used 2 of cooler master 92mm fans to cool the VRMs and by using Aerocool fan control i could control the temp of the mosfet's area as cool as 46ْ C under stress , controlled using thermosensor at the back of the card , at room temp of 20ْ C the cards are about 29-30ْ C ideal at stock speed and max temp of 54ْ C at full load , using the great Cooler Master Storm Trooper case .

Awesome. I'm considering that for my 580 LE SLI. I've used the TX3 before, amazing that those clips are perfect for the PCB on those, I wonder if they would be for the 580 LE too.. Probably?

Single rad doing the job good everyone? not bad..

I'm reading things about DWOOD's bracket being perfect, can someone link to where I could get one?

edit: OCN iCrap linked me to them

I don't see anything about the H60 though, Kuhler 620 or 920? Think the 920 will be worth it over the 620?

I would try to find a 92mm Yate Loon (medium or high speed) if I were you. I have a high speed one in my case and it moves more air than my 140mm YL Mediums and is very quiet. smile.gif

Anyone knows if I could install one of the EK Supreme HF universal waterblocks on my GTX680's and keep the stock cooler installed to keep the vrm's cooled?

Here's what I mean:
