[Official] NVIDIA GPU Mod Club - AKA "The Mod" - Page 226

Sorry if this isn't the best spot, but since you guys have a dedicated thread and all I thought this would be best.

So I'm building a new PC after my last one crashed and burnt.
I've got some parts together, got some more in the mail and a few more things I need to purchase. I know I will be putting 670s into SLI and I know I want to do The Mod. I'll only be buying one 670 now, second one in a month or two, depending on the cash flow. Got the money, but like to have the backup in case other **** hits the fan for unforeseen circumstances.
Is there any preference as far as GPUs go, or does it not matter as far as mounting these? As in does it need to be ref or just whatever? I know it matters for a lot of waterblocks. I am definitely getting those brackets as they look pretty awesome, so that's why I am asking. Never done anything like this to a GPU. Confident but I don't want to buy the wrong stuff and burn money. Most cards I am looking at are reference as the price is much more attractive, but there is one twin fan from MSI and one triple from Gigabyte.
The other issue is that since I will be doing SLI I want a case it will all fit into. I was looking at the Bitfenix Ghost as I think it looks well nice, but with putting two into SLI and doing The Mod I am not sure it will all fit in there nicely without killing the cooling bonus I get. The case has two fronts, but then I might need to take out all the cages. Contacted Bitfenix about that, but if someone has case recommendations that will work well for what I have in mind, please do recommend.
I already have an H100 and I was going to use that as I can easily get a second one on the cheap, but again, a space issue.
Which liquid loops are recommended? I keep reading the Antecs as their tubing is longer, leaving you more flexible, but of course it will also depend on the space in the case.

The reason I am not going full out water cooled with a real kit is mostly cost. The blocks I've seen run a hundred bucks and then you still need al the other stuff. I want to do it for my next build, but I cannot right now.

Anything I forgot? Anything else you guys need to know? Or am I totally off base here?

Welcome to OCN thumb.gif

I dont think it matters with what type of GPU you get.. reference is preferred but I think Dwood (bracket Artisen) can supply both.

Cases: the beauty of the mod is that it can and does work on a multitude of cases. Id suggest you get the case you want, rather than a case that you dont like because of the mod.

I have done the mod with a H50 and it worked well but the pump housing was rather tall. The Antecs are preferred because of 1) pump size and 2) longer, more flexable tubing.

Good luck. If you have any more questions, we're here, ready to help smile.gif

well im sure ill miss some things here but ill try to answer what i can based on what ive read and im sure many more will jump in and correct what ive messed up or just dont know.

As far as picking a gpu i would pick one based on what you want the finnished product to look like. There are gpus that can maintain the stock shroud which helps alot later when trying to cool the vrm and such. Cards such as my matrix for example do not require addional cooling as the stock shroud retains the original fans that were used for cooling before modding. If this is the case than look for a gpu with open side shrouds as using the "Brick" style shrouds will not allow the waterlines to come out of the gpu. You could cut holes i guess but it kills your warranty and honestly the mod was never about destroying the components but to allow the card to be returned to stock.if you so choose to without ever knowing it was done. this is harder to do and will requrie extra thinking on your part as to a method to retain the shroud. Dual fans in shroud will cool both ends of the card. If the card has a single fan sitting over the IHS than your going remove that fan anyways as the pump will now reside in that spot so keeping the shroud is not nessasary but will require another method of cooling the PCB components.

The second thing to look for is the heatplate that covers some cards. Some venders have them and some dont. Some will have a IHS which is resessed and when placing the pump leaves a gap between the top of the IHS and pump. The heat plate will need to be removed so the pump can sit on the IHS to cool it. There are other heatplates such as my Zotac 560ti which had the top of the IHS flush with the heatplate and allowed me to keep the heatplate and perfect contact with the IHS. This makes the mod super easy to do and requries you to rip the card down less, its quicker and the bottom of the pump will overhang onto the heatplate which will also help "wick" more heat from the heat plate. This allowed me to run my 560ti without any fans blowing onto the pcb at all (not requimended if you have new expensive cards or care if your card blows up... unlike me who didnt care).

Look at the first page of this thread as there is a members list and to the right of each members name Rage (OP) as added a link to each persons build log or pics of that persons gpu (needed to be included in the members list) that has had the mod performed on. This will make it easy to cross reference each build to another. It will allow you to see what the cards look like before and after and will have addional information of what the modder had to do or any special attention the specific card need to be modded.

If you decide to forgo the shroud youll need to pick the artison whos bracket you like. Dwood and Chmodlabs both have proven brackets and each have there own features unique to them. Dwood offers a bracket which has an area for a fan to be attached or a vanilla version which you supply the fan and you decide how to get air on the PCB, not sure about chmodlabs offerings for attaching a fan but im pretty sure he does. Or you can just use zippys like myself, never had an issue and have some of the best temps of anyone here but thats your choice.

This looks like a wall of text but the whole process is really simple and takes no time at all. Lots of information here to draw on and lots of good members willing to assist. The Mod is stupid simple, one of the reasons its caught on so quickly and well regarded by those who have done it. All the benifits of watercooling without the issues of maintance.

Picking your pump is also personal preference. The 620s offer longer more flexable hoses while Corsair offers models with thicker rads and the ability to add the Corsair Link Commander (h80/100) which will pretty much put the gpu on auto pilot including case lighting control. Corsair has shorter lines and less flexable.

Im not the guy to ask about cases but i can say that with the short lines of both units very large cases make it difficult to reach any of the mounting areas for the rads. Stacking empty fan casings may be required to reach those last few inches. My HAF 932 really restricts my mounting options. I am ok with just mounting the rad in the middle of the case and intake/exaust into the case. Still get 23c startup temps and never breach 58c unless the rad is dirty plugged or its like 100c+ outside and the ac cant keep up.

Lots of reading i know but im bored and felt like typing tongue.gif

well your sentence structure spelling and ideas flow much better in text than mine.. :> I need a translator. thank god this is a hardware site and im not the only one. :>

Ya sorry, ripped that off quickly. I'll clean it up in word and repost with a few structure changes. Reread it myself after waking up this morning and now need a nap.
Typing on my phone with swype, so wrong word means swype messed up. If anything doesn't make sense, sorry.

@Sethy: Thanks for the welcome.
I would still get a case I like, there are many. It just looks and sounds based on bitfenix reply that the ghost won't work since I will have to place two of these rads somewhere. I'll still get it when it releases and try, even if that means cutting it.
Since I will only have the gpus as far as pci goes I might even mod left over bays for exhausts. Lots of ideas, but no clue on which case.
I'm getting the gpus first so I can do some benches and then compare after. Hopefully I can decide today as there are some sales.
Would just like to have all the parts so I can start tinkering while benches go.
Pretty sure that two h100s won't work, so I've got one that I will likely cpu mount... Adding an air cooler now seems dumb.

Part 1 just in case my phone messes up.

@cravinmild: Those brackets look pretty boss, so I'm not worried about finished product look. I think shrouds look dumb anyway ; )
The bracket with the fan holder and cut out, now that is something I can go for. Just need to decide and what I want the text to read.

So basically I just need to research what the card looks like makes to figure out how this project will work with it. Easy stuff.

While zippies would work, they will be extremely visible without the shroud. It is an option and I might try it, but really the bracket plus fan seems better to me.

I think I will grab the antecs for this. I can always change it later if the longer tubing isn't necessary.

BTW, I like long replies, gives me more to think about and respond to. Makes it easier for me.

Thanks a lot guys. And for the pm about the asetek ebay page. Sadly not for 670.

Another quick question. That asetek set someone posted, would I be able to use that? I know one is cpu and the other is intended for certain gpus, but could it be modded? I'll have to look into their bracket sizing I guess. Shipping is expensive on that for me as I'm in canada.
Are you talking the closed loop CPU/gpu cooler. If so I can't see why not. The mod uses a pump for a CPU. Hose routing may pose and issue but other than that ....

Thread Starter
The only problem I see with the dual head unit is that the waterline of the rad to the CPU head is a bit short. Not sure if it would work for a sli setup.

:> I just realized you were OP here ;>
this might sooth your mind on a dual gpu loop. this is my dual 6950s with a mod i finished a day or two ago. The pump was from thermaltake water 2.0 pro.
btw i bought two if those kits at 69.99 you wont find anything close maybe you will for 169.99.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/sunset1sunset1/8001784090/in/set-72157631571162893

Ill have to wait till i get the kits but it looks longer than my modded kit besides it goes from the cpu to the first slot then back to the rad.
The simple solution is to put the pump in the 2nd gpu slot and the block in the first. Thats how i did it.
