I had no idea about this mod! If I were to do this, is there a specific list of parts I would need aside from the Kuhler? Also, I'm not sure how those of you with SLI cards are managing. I'm not sure there is enough space between cards, but if there is, then I have a case that may actually be optimal for this mod since I have a mesh panel on the side that would allow for 120mm fan mountings and may even allow for me to use 38mm fans on either side to really cool things down.

My motto is, if it don't fit, make it fit.

You got plenty of room. I have 2 480's stuffed in mine. No problemo! thumb.gif

I'm still reading through the thread......the mod does seem a little risky so I'm going to try to do this right, if I do, because I'm not a finesse kind of person. I tend to break things.

Aside from the other questions I've posted on this---I have to ask because I've actually replaced the TIM on my first 480, what is the best way you have found to do it and how much TIM did you use per GPU? When I first took it apart, I had no idea how to go about it because the GPU is huge, and the heatpipes did not provide a flat surface so I could not count on the TIM spreading well. I know this is different, but you seem to have a lot of different temperature readings. Also, it looks like you used several different TIM......your opinion on the differences couldn't hurt.

Oh, and the first thought that came to mind when I clicked over to the IHS removal thread was "balls of steel"......as I read the comments, I wasn't the only person that shared that opinion. thumb.gif

Hi guys sounds like ic diamond is working out pretty well. I had used artic silver 5 but was worried because i have a tendency to put too much tim on the gpu. The tim i used to get my best temps was mx-4 non conductive and non capacitive. frankly i made a few changes when i changed the tim on both cards but mx-4 has to take some of the credit. Im not one of those guys that likes to spend money unless i know it helps and is worth it. But in this case... Im going to say that useing a known good paste like the previous poster ic diamond or in my case mx-4 is definitely worth the price. I guess the real test is time. I wouldnt jump into the high dollar stuff untill you get everything completely finished tho.. I reseated my pump more times than i care to remember. :>
have a great weekend guys.

@silvergoat-- I wound up using IC Diamond 7 TIM. It's not a spreadable paste so I just put about a large rice size in the middle of the die/IHS and clamp it down. Took a few tries and tubes to get a proper seat. Some use Artic Silver, etc. Its really up to you.

IHS removal did help shave a few degrees off as did lapping the cold plate.

I use mx4 and mx5 along with some crap from Future shop. The surpise was the Futrue Shop gave me my best temps.... wore out quick too. I found that the thicker stuff is hard to work with and had to smear it across the IHS with a card. The thinner mx stuff was nicer to work with and both were fine when ive checked up on them a few months later. I removed the IHS and now its just a drop in the middle. The chip without the IHS is really about the size of a dime, not much tim was needed. The IHS removal shaved a few degrees off the lows but highs are about the same which are the low 50s average. Ive seen 17c start up temps on the gpu after IHS removal... 20c before and keep in mind it was very cold in the house those mornings those temps are not my average lows (average low of 23c-25c).

Not lapping the pump had caused me an issue where the tim would move away from the centre of the chip and only be present on the outer edges of the chip. The idle temps were fine but when ever i did anything simple like open a web page my temps would spike 20c instantly. The chip also took along time to cool back down. I was in no danger as the chip still did not go over 70c but the temp flutations clued me into the issue. Lapping the pump seems to have fixed the issue, no problems for eight months now.

I thought I would be able to pull this off, but it's unlikely. I just checked how much room I have between the side panel and internals to see if there would be any issues and there is just not enough room. On one side, the power cables for the graphics cards would put too much pressure on the card when pressed upon by the radiator and fan, and on the other side, the Noctua does not allow enough room. I'm not a modder, so I'm not going to be cutting stuff up to make it work.........just a little disappointed......but also happy that I will not be spending another $150 or so. My case does have a top radiator fan location that I am currently using as exhausts, but I am curious if the tubing can be modified to reach that far. I have a Corsair 650D case, and currently use the top fan locations as exhausts, but they are not that important since I can use the side panel as an exhaust, if necessary, since it is all mesh, and I'm sure any excess pressure can easily be vented across that window.

Silvergoat, don't be deterred. This is a great mod and I am very glad I did it, though I just modified the existing brackets to work because i didn't trust zip ties so I used bolts. If the 480 is anything like the 470 your in luck, I have a pictorial of a work log showing how to do it. The configuration I have them set up as is one rad in the back exhaust and the other rad in one of my two top 120 fan locations.
You can check it out 570/470 Closed Loop Cooling Mod Happy modding
If your wondering the cards are still 2 slots thick, I just installed an audio card between mine.

Well guys i think i'm ready to be part of the gang lol, will surely order my new RAM today (those beauties : http://www.corsair.com/en/memory-by-product-family/vengeance/vengeance-8gb-dual-channel-ddr3-memory-kit-cmz8gx3m2a1866c9.html?___store=en&___from_store=fr), and will surely order a new Kuhler 620 "unintentionally " biggrin.gif

But, looks like VRAM and the small things that regulate voltage and i don't remember the name have to be cooled too.
So i found the Swiftech MC14 but there is only 8 of them in a pack, and i don't have enough money left for a second one (i know it's cheap, but i have like 3€ left :s ).
Is it possible to cut the stock radiator on the card in pieces to make custom ones for ram and regulators ? So i'll just order some adhesive TIM (which one ?) and not the MC14.

Thanks ! smile.gif

Edit : ordered a Kuhler 620, a second ram kit Ripjaws 2x2Go PC12800, a VR005 ramsinks, and Arctic Silver thermal adhesive paste smile.gif
Can't wait to have it smile.gif
