Sry if this post seems out of context. It was originally posted on the IHS removal thread.

Begin wall-o-text

So I've read every ones comments here an it doesn't seem like anyone has destroyed their cards yet. So LEMME BE THE FIRST!

I was attempting this one 2x gtx 560s adding antec 620s to them. The first one I wasn't to sure the amount of pressure required to get the IHS off. And for the life of me couldn't get that godamn razor in. So i decided to see if I couldn't wedge the corner in to see if I couldn't get it started. While wedging it is I unknowingly put a small gouge in the PCB of the gpu chip (not the die). But I grew some balls an decided to follow the damn instructions like I was told. Put it in there long ways, used a flat head and a rubber hammer, two or three taps later it just POPS off with extraordinary ease.

So I go to remove the second gtx's IHS, now having previous experience I have it safely off in 3-4 taps. no problem at all.

Now to lap the antec head an attach it to the die.

Everything appeared to go off without a hitch. but unbeknownst to be the first cards water block had popped two of those stupid ass zip-ties (dumbest idea ever to me... but I thought "hey, everyone elses is working fine").

So. I start everything up (keep in mind I don't know the zip ties are broken) Load up GPU tweak check the temp at idle. Amazing. 25C. Go to the bottom to select GPU #2. Not there. Why, this is certainly odd.

Power off, check everything. Oh no... the water block popped off. Lemme remove you an fix you. Maybe you got to hot an shutoff. Replaced **** zip-ties. Block firmly attached to the die. Plug it in, attach SLI cables an power cables. Boot, and no success.

Now it had me worried. I removed it again an check everything twice. Couldn't find anything but the gouge in the PCB. but it was only 1mm on the side an barely in the copper (top layer I assumed was the CG , idk though)

Then I noticed I may have damaged a few leads while prying, Grabbed the ole MM an check them. By god they're connected. well then

MY QUESTION TO YOU.

WHAT THE F**K COULD I HAVE DONE?!?!

You could've burned up your 2nd GPU when benching, but fortunately most of the newer models are smarter than that and will turn themselves off or just not turn on before there's ever a problem.

Well that's the thing. I didn't benchmark them. I just turned it on to see if all was well an to look at idle temps. And when I went to look at the second gpu it never came up. I've since tried that gpu in slot 1 an it's not booting. Makes my system loop the post.

Just ordered 2 of these in hopes of fitting the enzotech heatsinks without having to cut them

hey whats up dudes,
add me to the list,
msi gtx670 old max temp was 67C new max temp of 50C
my new idle temp for the card is about 25C
the antec kuhler 620 was on sale at newegg for like 39,99
but i got screwed into paying like 49,
but still cheap !
why everyone dont do this i dont know !

and thats like about 5C less then my cpu with its 212+

although at a gaming load at stock speeds , i get an annoying coil whine.
totally ruins my day, sorta makes me not want to overclock it.

oh yea, on my mobo settings should i give the antec kuhler 620 full 100% fan speed power all the time ?
or only when i pop upen a game set it to 100 %
if i lower it to anything below like 75% it starts making audible noise, so i leave it at like 80% and 100% when gaming ?

NOW WITH THE DWOOD FAN BRACKET

you have to remove the last heatsink,
shown here, or else it will mash halfway through your 80mm fan.

like so, closeup

so i just got lazy and taped my delta fan under the card,
for now that is.

now with the dwood bracket,
you gotta be SUPER careful about how tight you twist those nuts,
i threaded em by hand till i couldnt and then decided to give en an extra twist with a screwdriver,

i turned untill i felt only the slightest bit of resistance , and the whole card was BENT under the pressure of the 4 bolts...

so i backed them off and cursed myself for doing this to my once $430 gpu
asking myself why werrent you happy with this kuhler ziptied on ?

i cleaned up and popped the card back in , and thank yawee / cithullu / christ or shiva whatever your pick it still seems to work just fine.

@cravinmind and everyone with a asetek dual pump/block clc I got a galaxy 2 GIG 660ti gc delivered today..
its currently being modded for a new intel build.. yes the dark side.. ;> I got the 3370 chip at micrcneter right before that madness on newegg.. so im in the doghouse.
However here is the wierd part..

The OEM bracket that comes with the kit FITS!!! This is the special gpu bracket for the oem kit. NOT a regular retail kit.

here is a link to the kit.. on ebay..
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Asetek-760GC-Combo-Liquid-Cooler-NVIDIA-GTX-470-480-570-580-/280965116990?pt=US_CPU_Fans_Heatsinks&hash=item416ad3743e

So DONT expect this to fit any other card. The galaxy has some special power added to the board and
(this is a guess) possibly they used a 570 or 580 pcb for it. it has one 6 and one 8 pin power connetor.
Maybe someone with more knowlege in this area can probe further. I havent checked temps to make sure depth of the chip isnt resesed but it looked flat.

I cant provide any more info as im attempting cooling the mobo vrms or the southbridge so this may take a while.. i may just leave the 2nd pump/block off.. until i find a suitable water block or adapter plate.
once again this is the card that was on newegg for 224.99 a few days back.
It will prob take me to the weekend to test as im waiting for other parts to arrive.

@sunset. Thanks for the heads up with the linky wink.gif I cant wait to see more pics..... also, ninja upgrades don't get you in trouble. Im interested in using the gpu bracket on my 580 matrix if possible, we will see.

@Lordred. Good job on the photo update. How is your buddy liking it.. I would think he would look something like this when asked biggrin.gif:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D lol. +reps for you thumb.gif

@KuramaKitsune. Nice log and pics, fantastic stuff. Nice to have another member here. +reps for you thumb.gif

@Xaian, Did you loop the ends of the zippys around the main one going around the pump or just use the nub on the end as a way to secure the pump to card. Ive seen this done and always wondered who would be the first to have their zippys come undone. You are not the first to rune a card. There was a user in our sister club "The Red Mod" for ati cards, they chipped the corner of the chip while mounting with a bracket. The IHS is VERY DANGEROUS and should only be done if your temps can not be decreased with other methods. I did mine but it was not required... id not do it again as the risk is not worth the couple of degrees reduction. Sorry to hear about your luck, hope it works out. smile.gif
