I like keeping the plate on. No messing around with VRAM, VRM heat sinks, and I keep the original fan.
Just needs a good sized shim, and some lapping. Add a small cardboard box for the fan.
Keep It In Context: The shim is needed only when the GPU top sits below the base plate. "In a pocket"
A shim is rumored to add 4-5c to the GPU chip. For the dinky little shims anyway..
The 40mm x 40mm shim I used has more than double the surface area in contact with the pumps copper plate.
Lapping the shim and pump makes that extra area useful.
