And yeah look at the link that Mark-o posted, that's what I was talking about smile.gif He does it for the CPU too I think

Ya they are stable. No matter what I do I can't go over 95+ without a crash. I have custom settings on TW3 but I'm using a crappy monitor right now because I'm home for the summer.

Hi

Does anyone know the size of the processor (die) and the hole spacing of the GTX 1080 custom ?

thanks

Hey guys, I have an MSI Gaming 980ti 6G and since I've decided I am going to skip the 1080 upgrade, I'm thinking of doing the mod on it, with a Kraken G10 + Kraken X61.

Haven't done this before though, so I wanted to ask if it's as straightforward as it looks? smile.gif Anything I should be extra careful with? Thanks!

Pretty straight forwardhttps://youtu.be/LM3DyUqWWns
Only think I would suggest is vram heatsinks if you are gonna over clock.

It really is as simple as it looks, something you might want to keep in mind is that if you want to keep the memory cooling plate you might need a shim (depending on if it's in the way of the block or not), the VRM cooling should be no problem though. As with most of these mods I think the Kraken comes without springs for it's screws, so you want to be extra careful when tightening the block on to the card.

You may also want to opt for not using the NZXT backplate so that you can use yours without problems.

I just did the g10 install onto an msi gtx 980ti 6g. You can still use the nzxt back plate if you peal off the foam pad. There is no need for a copper shim even if you keep their midplate

Sure you could, but there is really no necessity unless the person really want to do so. The backplate helps with the mounting process on some cards but it's not really necessary to mount it on the card, my point was simply that he would be able to choose to use either or, but at least according to what you say he could use both at the same time if he want to as well.

That said, you may end up scratching the backplate if you use the NZXT one without the foam as aluminium backplates are quite fragile to such damage. There is also a risk that he would put to much pressure on the components placed on the underside of the backplate if the MSI backplate doesn’t feature a proper thermal pad or foam there. It's all hypothetical since I don't have the card myself, but using both at the same time may lead to unforeseen consequences.

I'd be interesting to see how people would treat air cooling with coollaboratory liquid ultra after this mod. After going back to air cooling I haven't hit 60c yet with a pretty aggressive fan curve and hefty overclock.

Should be interesting to see. I have hypothesised for a long time that the main obstacle for cooling a GPU is that it works as a highly concentrated heatsource (more so than CPU since they can spread it out). Thus it would not be surprising to see a better gain with using high cuality TIM on a GPU than what you would see on a CPU.

I also think that a lot of the issue with the air coolers is that they often run at maybe 20-30% until the GPU hits 90*c and it ramps up to 100%, which is bad for noise and any potential OC. I still think you wills truggle getting air cooling as quiet as you can get watercooling though (although you don't have to deal with the annoying pump), simply because of the limited space that is over the graphics card PCB.

So you kept MSI back and mid plates and for the G10 backplate you only had to remove the foam so it would fit, no other shims needed for it or the GPU cooler? Are you happy with the results? smile.gif Cheers!
