I don't see why it shouldn't work, but I doubt it will perform much better than the stock cooling. I would rather try something like the g10 or another AIO mod. Most 290 air coolers do produce some amount of noise under load and while the Accelero extrme would provide good cooling I would set it to be a bout the same as the Saphire tri-X or the Gigabyte Windforce. so you could read some reviews of that and see if you think there will be a significant change.

Personally I would rather go for something like the Corsair Hg10, NZXT G10 or Richies fitting method and a cheaper aio unit. They would put less strain on the card and would cool better. Depending on your budget you can even go for a 240mm radiator for it for a nice and silent card (which I did on my 7950).

Decided to try this mod with a Enermax LiqMax II 120S and the results are great went from 80ºc to 45ºc full load, still testing OC

My 1st run with a simple oc of 1250/1650

Were you using zipties to mount the cooler to the GPU? My 7950 seems to max out at 74C under load at 1150/1600. Been thinking about ghetto-rigging a water cooler to it like I did once to an old GTX 560.

besweeet i have a asus top R9 280X so i used the metal thing on the side to get a ziptie around the card to make presusre on the block and it works well
post #2855 of 3007
Hey guys, I just joined overclock.net, so try not to judge me lol. So, I've been researching this "Red Mod" for a while. I have an r9 280 that has been getting into the high 70's under load. I have a spare H60 and im going to do this mod. However, i was thinking that the AMD bracket could be used but with zipties, because i want the corsair logo to be upright. I was thinking that the screw mounting thing for the amd bracket could have a zip tie through it and then have that ziptie go through the mounting holes on for the gpu bracket. I will post pics explaining this if any of you guys need it.

There are many ways to do this mount, all you have to make sure of is that the pump makes good contact with the core. If done wrong the mod could kill your card almost in an instant, so it's good to either follow methods that are proven to work or at least check to see that it should work.

It is a bit unclear to me exactly what you want to do, so a picture or two would probably help in that regard. That way we can see if there is anything wrong.

I put an H55 with a Kraken G10 onto my wife's Powercolor R9 290 Turbo Duo a while back and it worked out alright. This one was an LF R29F original reference PCB.

Installation of the bracket:
http://www.overclock.net/t/1487012/official-nzxt-kraken-g10-owners-club/3080#post_23767832

Installed into her rig:
http://www.overclock.net/t/1487012/official-nzxt-kraken-g10-owners-club/3130#post_23788787

I finally got around to installing my other Powercolor R9 290 Turbo Duo but this time with the Pulse Modding GPU bracket instead. This particular one was a newer and cheaper LF R29FA PCB. I had to order the bracket from Kustom PCs in Scotland (I'm in Canada).

Installation

Pulse Modding GPU Bracket (got 2 just because I was paying for shipping anyways).

Cougar Turbine CFT12SB 4 pack. For $25, why not? I was going to need them for the radiator and case anyways.

A Zalman ZM-F2 FDB to cool the VRMs in the back.

The 92mm fan installed onto the bracket.

Stripped and cleaned the card. Not pictured is a blob of Arctic Silver 5.

Installed with some rubber washers so I won't scratch up the card just in case I need to RMA the thing.
T

All done.
u

A closer look.
T

A look from the side.

Dug out an old blower to get some of that hot air from the VRMs out.

All installed in a Silverstone GD09. It's not final as I have an EX58-UD5 v1.6 and X5675 on the way. Currently running a TBGM01 and X5550.

Temperatures

Originally, I had it as a push-pull exhaust with a pair of those Cougar Turbine CFT12SB fans but temperatures were hitting 80°C peak and sitting around 72°C while gaming. Then my PSU died because of a power surge (stupid me for not using a surge protector after my UPS battery died) so I took it out and put in an ancient 500W PSU and R9 270 temporarily.

A few days ago, I finally had time get dig up and put in an old Enermax Liberty 620W (after I snagged an EMC008 8-pin cable, the last one in Canada...) and got the R9 290 back in but this time, I opted to go push-pull intake. What a huge difference it was. It hit 67°C peak when I ran the GPU 100% for about 20 minutes. Oddly, it was Sleeping Dogs benchmark results screen that pushes the GPU load to 100% for some odd reason. In Archeage, it sat around 57°C while AFK for 8+ hours. When I played Sleeping Dogs or Hitman Absolution for an hour each I never saw it go over 48°C while gaming.

As for the VRMs, I had GPU-Z running while testing and gaming and the max temperatures I got were 52°C on VRM1 and 54°C on VRM2. I think the PCI slot blower really made a difference by sucking up the heat and kicking it out.

I think the reason that it's cooler having the radiator cooled by intake is that I'm getting cooler air into the case and seeing how the case is designed, the airflow works a lot better by taking in cool air from the sides and blowing hot air out the back. When I had it as an exhaust like some others prefer, the airflow is disrupted inside with air only coming in from the other side of the case and not only is the radiator fans fighting for air but it's only getting warm air.

Good luck to anyone else interested in trying the mod.

EDIT: Actually, Archeage gets 78°C on VRM1 and 81°C on VRM2. Neither Sleeping Dogs nor Hitman Absolution pushes the GPU as hard. This horribly optimized game even gets the GPU up to 61°C when running around the game.

Probably, the difference in screw placement isn't that much different. 54mm between them on AMD and 58mm between them on Nvidia. Don't see why you couldn't try at least, zip ties are not exactly expensive after all smile.gif

I successfully mounted it and it seems to work really good. I only used 4 zipties total, wasted about 30 or so trying various methods. I will post pics soon, but when I move the radiator up it raises temps to 90c but when its lower down it never gets above 52c in games. When i get the money i will but a bracket on it from richie_2010 or similar. do you think the temp things are ok for now? I cant seem to get the zipties any tighter.

Thanks, Alex
