As it turns out, it is possible to mount a Corsair H105 with an NZXT G10 Kraken to a reference R9 290.

NZXT lists the H105 as a compatible cooler for the 290, but there's a bit of a stumbling block since the H105 pump top has three "aesthetic value only" tabs which will block two of the four mounting screws on the G10.

If you flip the block over, you'll see that these tabs are just hollow plastic, bearing no importance to the function of the pump/top.

Mock up the fit and orientation of your H105 to the 290, marking the material you need to remove. Use a file or rotary tool (and eye protection) to remove the excess plastic.

Remove enough material so that you can get the remaining two nuts on the mounting bracket bolts. Clean everything up and reinstall.

FWIW, also using the GELID VRM cooler. Ambient in the house is 20°C. At idle, Core: 31°C, VRM1: 23°C, VRM2: 37°C. After 10 minutes of Furmark, Core: 56°C, VRM1: 67°C, VRM2: 57°C. I'm pretty dang happy with this setup for now. I can't justify a custom loop when I game, at best, 15 hours a month. These temps definitely leave headroom for more voltage and faster clock speeds. Time to enjoy this new rig for a while.

my update biggrin.gif

BTW happy birthday to The Red Mod biggrin.gif

As you can see, I have 4 fans for the rad, 2 fans on the top is mainly to cool the VRMs and VRAM, but my VRMs would still gets pretty hot. 1040mhz core / 1300mhz mem / -50mv they still got to 79C. At max OC 1170 core / 1600 mem / +100mv is 116C in Witcher 3 Ultra (I live near the equator, ambient temp at night when I'm home usually 28-30C)

Heya people,

I was unfortunate enough to burn the fan socket on my R9 290 Sapphire reference, so I need a new cooling solution, because the fan motor also blew.

I'm having everything stuffed in a Node 304 mITX case, so I have maybe 2.25 slots for the GPU + cooler.

Does anyone know of a red mod I could do where I would not have to use 3 slots? Maybe a specific cooler which tubes arch well so they can be rerouted to the back of the case?

Currently my CPU AIO is sitting there, but replacing that with a stock HSF is better than not having my GPU ;/

In other words: I'm looking for an aftermarket cooling solution that doesn't largely exceed 2 slots potential, because I work in a mITX case, and do not have a working cooler at all for my R9 290.

Thanks in advance!!

modded a fan (from the stock cooler) to the VRM, and everything I've ever wanted from this mod biggrin.gif

Does the tubes of the cooler move enough for it to fit on your card and be within 2.5 slots. My basic mounting bracket is 2mm thick. You may need reverse the screws or pick up some shorter ones smile.gif

Thanks for your reply. Do you mean to say the mod will always take 2.5 slots? Or is possible to fit it in 2 slots?

Cheers

Hi guys,

I am going to give this a go with my H80, do i need a mounting bracket or will zip ties do? I have bought some copper plates from ebay and have an old Athlon 64 heatsink that I hope to cut up to make a vrm heatsink so unless I cut my fingers off I will try and take some pics of it as go.

I'll be following this guys work...

http://www.mckeemaker.com/2014/01/diy-vrm-heat-sinks-for-amd-r9-290.html

But I'll be making two heatsinks, another bar of copper will run along the other side of my gpu ( sapphire tri-x, refernce r9 290 board) with a few washers on to prevent it pressing down too far on some of the taller components and I will tighten these both down with screws going through the existing holes on the baord. My reason for the heatsink here is that I get a ~ 10 degrees drop when I place a small fan over that area.

Cheers,

Johnny
