[Official] AMD/ATI GPU Mod Club - AKA "The Red Mod" - Page 34

Yep, definitely had the mount. You can see the screws there. Welp, I'll see what support can do, and if they'll cover it. Already put it back to stock.

I've witnessed these cracks since the days of athlon XP pressure mods.

Usually not too life threatening but if you were constantly changing coolers and boards around they eventually died.

Very sad yours ended up this way. :[

You know if XFX or any companies honor the warranty for this? Hoping I don't have to get a new GPU.
As far as I'm concerned it just wont post.

Try cleaning all the thermal compound off the resistors first.
If your using a compound that allows any amount of current though it then that will stop it posting as well.
Iv seen cracks worse then that and chips survive. But if it doesn't work after cleaning thermal compound then it has to be a goner.

Im guessing the base of your cooler is convex as well meaning it would of been putting all the pressure on the out side of the die.
Yeah I'm using Tuniq TX-2, a non-capacitative non-conductive compound, so it shouldn't be that. I was granted an RMA, so I'll see how that goes.

Yeah, it is a bit convex. Also there was a bit of PCB sag, so I'm guessing that contributed.

just so sad that if I hadn't decided to remount, it would have been working fine.

We've all been there... the whole "if I had just left it alone..." moments.

When making my V1 mount I chipped all the corners on my reference 6970 card, Just from trying to get an idea on how the block would sit. I wasn't even mounting it yet, just test fitting. Odly enough it didn't die, Although it did stop being recognized...a trip to the oven later and all was well until a little metro2033 burned one of the VRM's...The GPU dies are very fragile, but XFX did do the RMA and gave me the refurb card which I have now, and used for all the stock temps.

I'm still on the fence with this refurb card as I'm not sure if its the source of newly found artifacts, but xfx is working with me on it so that's nice. I haven't attempted to mod it yet until I know for sure whether it is or not. Once I know all is well though, whether its this refurb card or a replacement RMA you can bet its getting my V1 cooler biggrin.gifthumb.gif

They didn't mention anything about the chipped corners? I noticed on mine, after looking carefully, that they are also chipped.
