I can get spiking also, ive gotten to the point that i dont worry about it myself. I use GPU Tweak for Asus cards and have the ablility to go back over a session and see where the temps were at any time on a bar graph. Those spikes last for a split second and can happen on the core or mem. I can see average of 49-52c but a spike of 63c can happen.... shrug, whatever... its was that way with stock cooling also. The are just a peak and they are quick.

in everest i get display mem and shader and vrm listed in temps. at idle on my 6950 with unlocked shaders i get 34C and oc scanner 50c after 10 mins. im using a gelid vrm heatsink similar in pic above and it says my vrms are colder than my core.

Would like to post my pics on my 7970 successfully modded with 920 and Dwoods bracket! biggrin.gif

Can upload higher res pic if someone wants me to wink.gif

Edit: Oh yeah forgot to ask haha! The mod works perfectly for me, BUT while playing LoL (only game I've tested so far) the screen flickers from time to time with graphical defects, not artifacts i think but large spiky things. Is this because of the VRAMs getting too hot? I do have heatsinks on them and a fan above, but I had HUGE trouble fastening them, I ended up using normal TIM and pressing really hard for a couple of seconds until they had some kind of attatchment... Anyone got a solution? frown.gif

I used a gelid heatsink on my vrms on my 6950 and the pcb for yours looks the same screw spaces and dimentions, I got it from eBay

I have upgraded to a 6990 and if anyone would be interested in my modded 6970 pm me thanks. My card idles at 34c and doesn't ever get above 70c in burn in. I have only overclocked it with Catalyst Control Center Overdrive to 950mhz GPU Clock and 1450mhz Memory Clock. I'll let the card go for 300.

intersting, not many of us sell the cards with a premod on them. Good luck and i hope it sells quickly for you.

What are your gpu and vrm temps? Anyone else having vrm temp problems with this.

I ended up finding an artic xtreme for my 7970. It does great on temps but not so well on vrm's even with heatsinks. I am just wondering if the red mod would of been a better option.

The mod mimics what the card had before for pcb cooling.... which is air cooling. You will benifit over stock cooling abit on the vrm as the air is not forced though the heatsink fins prior to being blown down onto the pcb. This means the vrm is not being cooled with +60c air when under loads... perhaps hotter.

How do you know currently your vrm temps, temp sensor on the card or lazer temp sensor of some sort?
Well I may have made my vrm temps sound exaggerated. They are fine at stock clocks. I can only overclock to 1150 because of vrm temps. Poor me. I asked because he above me mentioned that vrm temps were limiting him also. My thought is that I could get 1175-1200 at stock volts, or even more with higher volts if I had better vrm cooling.

You are right in that the difference is I wouldn't have 60c air going over it. To the point.

I have read pretty much this entire thread and I have not seen anything about people modding the 7870. Is there some sort of issue with this card regarding the Kuhler 620, or is it just that it is not considered hot enough for "The Red Mod"?

I was considering doing this with my card, so that I can keep my core at 1325MHz 24/7, but apparently I would be the first one! Can anybody help me understand why it has not yet been done with a 7870?

Thanks,
