[Official] AMD/ATI GPU Mod Club - AKA "The Red Mod" - Page 50

post #491 of 3006
Yeah I guess I should specify some more. It's running at stock settings and the radiator does get warm a little. But the thing is as soon as the card hits 70c (after 20-30 seconds) my monitor goes into power savings mode and the audio freezes. I have a fan blowing on the card too so the VRM gets about as hot as 46c.

As a side note, before attempting this mod my card would reach ~75c but would be perfectly stable. Its the XFX Double Double model (not black edition).

Sounds like either your pump or fan aren't hooked up correctly. I didn't push the pump connector on all the way once and the same thing happened, go double check everything.

Nope both are plugged in completely. Thanks for the reply though!

That's crazy warm for stock settings.

Fans both blowing the same directions. I'm thinking time but as it goes above this temp stock and is stable perhaps the mount is too tight and warp the PCB.....idk, worth suggesting

If this is the case what you will need to do is get a copper shim, or make one, and do the big mac attack (block \ paste \ shim \ paste \ gpu). High temp is from the chip being recessed.

Hi everyone! I have changed cooler on my 7970 reference from XFX with the mod and therefore had to buy "Arctic Silver Thermal Adhesive, Glue" to get the heat sinks on the VRAM, and what I think is the voltage regulators (?). I read the instructions which said that I would have to put silicone on all open circuits near to not short-circuit them, but then I did not see a single circuit in the vicinity of the places I was going to "glue" so did not bother with this. When I put the card in the computer and turned it on it started for one second, everything started to spin and then it instantly died and I think I feel a faint odor of burnt (may as well have been a shock imagination...). What do I do now?! Can I using a knife and try to cut away the "glue" around all the places I put it on? Is there any risk that I cut down anything important? Almost having a small panic attack right now, all help is appreciated enormously...

// Pontus

Edit: On what I think is the voltage regulators, I'm using a single heatsink over two to three pieces at once, do they short over each other? If so, I've found my problem...

Hey guys,

I just got a visiontek 7970 and boy is it loud.. and temperature sensitive! I can fold at 1150/300 no problem but have to keep the fan at 60% when doing so. I saw this thread and thought it higly interesting.

I don't have time to run through 50 pages but can someone with a 7970 recommend me:

a) best watercooling solution (h80, h100, 620, etc) for the 7970? Which is the best "bang for the buck" ?
b) what additional equipment I'll need to buy in addition to the cooler?

I have a haf X so I can basically use any sized radiator desired. Ideally the cooler would keep the gpu in the 60s when folding? I messaged dwood a few days ago and he told me $15 for the whole shebang for extra equipment for the 620. Before buying anything though, would rather do some more research here...

Thanks in advance everyone!

So I reseated the 620 so now it no longer crashes at 70C, but the card still runs very hot =/ Any advice?
