Thanks for the info Sunset, I am reading through your link and will use the Edit function from now on. Unfortunately that TT performer is no longer on sale via NewEgg...however like all things that sell well on NewEgg...the sale will be back, possibly better than this time!

Finally all parts arrived to do the mod.
Will post pics later on and thank you to other OCN members for answering my questions:

Dwood
MGMG8GT
Subcutaneous
itznfb
Cyclops
beniroc

Card: Visiontek 7970 reference.
Mounting: Dwood Bracket, had to fix mine abit had some minor imperfections on the teeth
VRM Cooling: VRM cooling was done via Gelid VRM kit and 92mm Scythe PWM fanmodded for direct control via the PWM module on the card.
Copper shim used was the EK CU shim due to thinness and larger surface area
TIM Used: Noctua N1-H1, you want something that spreads easily with not alot of downard force.
I previously tested a more viscous TIM IC7 Diamond, and it was 1-2 degrees hotter. (Thanks to MGMG8GT for the ballpark idle temps)

Water CLC Zalman cnps20lq basically the same as other Asetek units except with a 38mm thick radiator.
Mounted Fans 2xGentle Typhoons AP-15s

Temps: Based on an Ambient 30°C

Idle: Core: 28-29 degrees VRMs: 25°C-26°C
Load: 1200MHZ @ 1.237v - 42°C - 43°C VRMs 67°C-69°C

I could go up to 1215 MHZ w/o Artifacts detected on GPUtool, basically it's like OCCT and the driver will not throttle the card upon detection.
Any higher resulted in random artifacting at random intervals. Not sure what causes it maybe due to vdroop causing some instability in the core, or needs even cooler temps >40 degrees.

Setting Core Voltage at 1300mV. VDDC at load reads 1.211-1.215V. Huge Drop. Card limitation not trying to exceed TDP or PSU?

Hey, j4mmy, nice mods! Just wanted to share some info that may be useful : I mounted my 920's rad in the dvd bays under my burner and got 3 deg average reduction in temps! It's also another spot in case you wanna CF. (if you aren't using the bays of course) Again, nice work!

My 920 rad is also in my DVD bay area, would not reach anywhere else in my HAF very easily.

Yeah, and the extra benefit it the intake fan can be swapped out for a LED model that is much quieter. I decidede on the Lepa Casino 1c to match the stock 140 in my Zalman case. This also leaves room at the rear exhaust area for another one for either gpu's or to add in a single loop with pumps on gpu's and cpu. Personally, though I wouldnt put a 38 or 49 mm rad back there though, just a 25 with the pull fan outside the back to make for a cleaner look inside.

Well, I took the plunge with my PowerColor 7970 Vortex II. Right now I'm running with zip ties (have some Dwoods' brackets on order with 120mm fan mounts) and I already have a few things I plan on changing. I used Antec Formula 7 for all thermal connections, and it does alright, but I can't help but feel it's lack of easy spreadability causes it to be an uneven application (I got it for $3 a tube). Might be time for something better. Any opinions? I've heard good things about PK-1. Anyway, Idle temps are currently about 28C to 30C, for core and VRMs. High in GPU-Z after running Furmark for a couple minutes was 62C core and 68C VRM1 (51C VRM2?), and that was with no additional fan on the VRMs so the factory VRM heatsinks seem to do fairly well even without extra air. I should also mention, this card is factory clocked at 1100MHz core and 1425MHz memory. With the factory cooler, I had OC'ed to 1150MHz core and 1600MHz memory with no voltage mods and would run 72C core and 78C VRM after 15 minutes in Furmark. I wonder what kind of OC this will do, when all is said and done? Obviously will reseat when brackets arrive and may change TIM then too. I still plan on adding some VRAM sinks as soon as they arrive (Accelero sinks from their extreme 7970 kit; might get some Enzotech copper sinks later). Also, no pics installed because I don't have it finalized the way I want but I thought I'd show the transformation. Shim is the EK one. The 620 is rough lapped (flat with 600 grit until the screws in the waterblock where it is significantly different; will likely re-lap).

Enough talk, more pics!

Pre-Mod (pretty quiet and cool, but there's always cooler and quieter):

PCB and OEM Cooling:

PowerColor Factory VRM Heatsinks:

Factory Cooler (notice the recessed core contact? Good indicator that you need the shim):

Backplate (doesn't act as a heatsink of any kind but keeps the PCB rigid):

Shim And OEM Cooler For Comparison:

Shim On Top Of Core (Pre TIM):

Attached!

7970 And Kuhler With 38mm Spacer And Window Seals (Function Over Form):

While taking some pictures, I noticed a cool effect when focusing on the core.

Focus Close:

Focus Far (that's the chandelier in the reflection of the core! Hah!):

Thanks for paying attention to my little post. Any feedback is welcome and I'll post some finalized pics when everything is as I want it. Now, how do you get officially in this Club? biggrin.gif

Youll need to plug it in and turn it on lol. I highly suggest you figure out how to keep stock shroud with fans. Well worth the extra effort imo. Sexy card btw

I did plug it in and turn it on! Need a video or something? Pics of it installed? Its a little less than ideally configured right now since I have it setup with a 1200RPM Cougar pushing through a 38mm spacer (gutted Foxconn fan) and the radiator is zip tied to the exhaust grill of my case. It has window seal between the fans and the radiator to keep the air path sealed. I'd like a pull fan on the back of the setup, but with my 212+ in the way, I'm going to have to get another Kuhler for the CPU before I have room to mount it all! As it is, I have a little more than a 1/2" clearance between the 212+ (in push only) and the Cougar. Lot of hot air and not nearly enough airflow.

I don't know what the issue is with the pump some people have but mine made some gurgling noises for about 10 seconds and has been pretty quiet ever since. Any noise was certainly drowned out by the slight whooshing of the fans. I had the side of the case off and it was about 2 feet away from me. It was even sitting next to my monitor so not muffled by a desk or anything.

So, what are the advantages of the factory shroud? Mine mounted to the heatsink itself so it would be a little difficult to reattach (although the factory fans are removable, so I could try and mount those separately). Also, I do have a Dwoods bracket on the way with a mount for a 120mm fan (probably another Cougar) that would make any sort of shroud attachment very difficult at best without cutting it to pieces. I had hoped to keep the OEM cooler in case I need to RMA the card for any reason.

And yes, it is a sexy card. PowerColor did a great job if you ask me. The lack of factory memory chip cooling is a little odd though, but seems to work well enough. Much better without the red from the factory cooler because the rest of my rig is mostly blue and black, but I don't have a window and care more for performance than looks so color is irrelevant.

nice card. ^^^
most people just take a photo of the card installed with the pump in the case.
just curious is the chip the same height of the metal bracket around it on your card?
I did notice the built in shim on the heatsink...
keeping the shrowd helps inprove airflow with stock fans if possible.
Dwoods bracket works well for many but then again thats a nice fan setup if you can use it.
thanks for the photos! that card would make a nice edition to my case... thumb.gif

I'll have to take a pic or two of it installed tonight. It's a newer build (left overs from re-casing another machine and some new stuff) so it doesn't exactly have that finished look, but I suppose it still counts.

As for the shim, I don't have a micrometer to measure the thickness of the gap, but the shim certainly sits down inside the surrounding bracket (indeed a recessed core). It sticks up further by only a little bit so I would say its definitely needed to make a good contact. I would be uncomfortable using the amount of thermal past/adhesive/etc that it would take to fill that gap. If I had to make a comparison, I would say the difference is a little less than the thickness of a dime.

As for the color scheme, maybe that's just wishful thinking since now I have orange and gray to go with my blue, white, and black. Maybe I should start the no-color-scheme-mutt-machine club. biggrin.gif
