O.O. Moved the screen? Please explain how that works. I thought you said it was completely random.
Also, Warhaven's explanation sounds very plausible. I googled your problem and many topics have mentioned a problem with the battery. Does it still dim with no battery inserted?

Even if it's still holding a charge fairly well, I've found that with this model laptop the battery can start sending odd signals to the laptop. There are two indicators of a failing battery:
1. The laptop will only boot off of AC adapter, even if the battery seems to be holding a charge fairly well and continues to run off battery fine after boot and removal of AC adapter.
2. Screen brightness flickers.
We have about 200 of these laptops at work, so I've run into this problem from time to time.
I had the battery replaced over winter break and once I got back to school (early January) I wiped the hard drive and reinstalled Leopard.

There are certain things that make the screen go black more often. Like when the screen brightness is all the way up it doesn't usually last long. I can try running it without the battery and just off of the AC plug and see if the problem continues. If it does then we can eliminate the battery.
