Advice on upgrading my rig, plz.

Thread Starter
So turns out Im finally gonna have some extra cash works going good and time to reward myself. biggrin.gif

My current setup is:

Athlon x 2 CPU
Crap Asus single PCI-e motherboard
AMD HD 6850 Black edition GPU
4 Gig G.Skill ripjaws
650w PSU

My budget is 300 bucks. what would be the best route to see good gains FPS wise in games. I mainly game. I know Intel 2500k kicks ass as I use to have one, but that means buying a mobo too. So, I could just stay AM3 and grab a quad core and better GPU. Not really sure what would net me the most FPS in games like BF3, SC2, Metro 2033, and other graphically demanding games yet to be released.

This will be the only money I put into it for several months, due to priority's so any help would be much appreciated.

you wont need more than 4gb. Trust me its just a waste of money. You should only get more money if you got like an extra 20-30 bucks.

The six core is great.
Overclock your processor when you get it and there you go.

What is your actual motherboard? Don't throw a 125W TDP chip on an "Asus micro crap" as your sig rig says.. not unless you want to blow up your motherboard anyways. if anything the only foreseeable upgrade I see you getting is probably an 960T. Best price, and a 95W tdp. Assuming your board isn't super super suck.. it should work fine.

Asus m4n68t V2 I believe is the model of my board.

I was thinking of the phenom quad and better board or better gpu...Or a i3 sandy.

stay with amd bro its cheap and it gets the job done. No offense to Intel. intel is a great cpu company as well no doubt.
Well your better off with the x6 cuz its only $25 more. By getting an x6 and a water cooler. That destroys a i3 maybe even an i5 if you overclock.

What i got for you is a great setup.

Your board has terrible VRM's. If you wish to stay with AMD I suggest the 960T. Not another Phenom II either, ONLY the 960T. I say this because the 960T has a 95w TDP and all others have a 125W TDP including the X6's. If you do go this route, do not unlock it either because it will also unlock the 125w TDP.

besides.. the 960T is the best Phenom II quad core anyways.

Don't listen to the guy above me either. Sure, an X6 is a fine choice.. but not with your board. You will seriously be risking your boards life by doing that. thumb.gif

whoops double post. damnit.

EDIT: And if you want to go with Intel that's not a bad decision. You could pick up an i3-2100 for about $100 and then an 1155 z68 motherboard and have room to upgrade to ivy bridge later on. (uses same 1155 socket) The i3-2100 is a beast of a dual core, plus it has hyper threading thumb.gif

So a x6 and a new mobo? you think doing that and sticking with my lil 6850 will net me better fps? Or get a quad and somthing like a 6950?

iinversion.... I was recommending that motherboard to go along with it. So shutup. I think you should read my posts before you give this guy a worse deal than the one I'm suggesting him for his price range. I think I know what I'm talking about.

Lol you are funny. You never suggested a motherboard, just some liquid pre-built cooler. An X6 won't mix well with his current motherboard, but whatever. It's not my hardware. I warned you. thumb.gif

EDIT: LOL you suggested a FM1 socket gigabyte motherboard with terrible VRM's anyways. How is he supposed to put an X6 on that? Yeah you know what your talking about. I'm done here.

Doubleninjaedit: nice change bro wink.gif
