I would think that the 7970 is at the peak of the 955's performance. There might be some bottlenecking, but not a whole lot. Going thuban won't help much unless you OC further. Most game's are not multi threaded to take advantage of 6 core's. BF3 is:) I can tell you that on my 955 be @ 4.0Ghz and 2800 NB would be at 70-90% load on BF3 (at mostly full ultra, less AA and no HABO) while my 6970 @ 960Mhz/1500Mhz would be at 100%. In skyrim my CPU sits at about 50-60% and GPU is at full load. Hope's that helps some.

955 @ 3.8GHz will run a 7970 just fine. If you had an OC'd 2500K for eg. ,then it would run alittle better( better minimum + maximum FPS)

A Thuban won't do any good as most games use 4 core as is and core for core, the 955 and 10xxT are the same in performance.

Do not go FX/990FX! Ever! This last Friday I changed form my 955BE and GA-990FXA-UD3 to a i5 2500k and ASUS P8Z68-Z PRO/Gen3. While I could do ultra on BF3(even at stock) with my 6970 my CPU was just almost at its limits. FPS was great, very smooth, but a powerful card like the 7970 might be held back some by it. If you have the hundreds to drop on a 27 inch and a 7970 do the decent thing and get an i5 2500k. The AMD FX CPU's can't hack it. I would put my 955 BE at 4.0/2800 toe to toe with a BD chip any day.
