AMD FX-6100 vs Phenom x4 965

Hi

Which CPU would be better for gaming at stock and overclocked speeds (around 4GHz probably). I mostly play games like portal 2, dirt 3 and gmod.
I know the intel guys will tell me to get a 2500k and I would, but I cant afford it right now as I would need to change my mobo and cpu.

Thanks

Just stick with your Phenom II x4, you could buy a AM3+ board and just wait for Piledriver.

I'm surprised your saying that as your running bulldozer but thats some good unbiased advice I suppose. Are you happy with the performance of your bulldozer cpu?

Yes and no. It's actually not to be bad, when I had Skyrim I played it on ultra with my current setup and got 60fps, I used fraps and it said my average was 53fps. But benchmarks on the web show otherwise, it shows the Zambezi(First Gen Bulldozer) chips lagging behind. You have to take into account also that I have a pretty crappy monitor(1280x1024) this economy is hurting me, so maybe that's why my FPS are in the 50's and 60's. If you want my honest opinion Bulldozer was hyped up so much that when it was released and didn't live up to expectations it was automatically thrown under the bus. You'd probably wont see any performance difference between the FX-6100 and your Phenom II x4.

This is probably what I'd do if I could go back in time, but I agree based on a caveat or two. Also, I've only worked with and seen benches for Phenom II's vs 8120. As a result, I can understand why people would choose a Phenom II over a 8120. As an extension of that idea, IMO the choice is Phenom II vs 8120/8150, not the 6100 unless price is the main factor for a decision. If price is the deciding factor, then get whichever choice is cheaper.

I think it all depends on price and individual circumstances. I had a 955 oc'd to ~3.97 and was itchin' to upgrade. I got the 8120 for ~$190, which was less than any 2500k that I could find. I gobbled it up figuring it would satisfy my nerdy e-itch to get something shiny, new, and fun to play with. I also do some work that takes advantage of moar cores, so I thought, "What the hell?" The fact that I got my mobo (sig rig) for $170 also sweetened the deal, figuring a comparable mobo for intel costs the same or, more than likely, more money.

Well, the 8120 is fun for tinkering with, but with my parts in my house the 8120 @ 4.5 ~= 955 BE @ 3.97 in gaming & single core performance. Even then, I can find benchmarks I've done where the 955 is sliiightly better in these areas.

In short, I don't look back on my decision because of the money I paid and some of the apps I use can make use of 8 cores. If I were you, I'd stick with your sig rig & elbow drop in another 6870.

Any input on this - I am using a 6100 - running at 4200 with turbo enabled at 4800 - runs fine. I also have a 960T Zosma - it didn't want to unlock extra cores for me (probably operator error), so let's consider it as a 4 core, from what I have read most seem to run around 4000 MHz.

I don't game at all, use a blueprint estimating program that is heavy into large Tiff files, xml files, and excel files.

Which CPU should I be using?

So, no money is at play here, just the better processor for my needs - don't mean to hijack the thread, just seems like an extension of the OP's question.

For multithreaded workloads, the FX-6100 is slightly better.
For gaming, the Phenom II is slightly better.
Neither is really superior to each other.

If I was looking to upgrade from a Phenom II, I would save up enough money for a ~150$ mobo and a ~200 CPU and see what I could get for that price. Right now the best choice would be 2500k, but that could easily change in the future.

I would stick with the 965 for now...it doesn't worth the upgrade to a 6100.
