a big task to do, Flight simulator X max capacity build ? recommendations and experience needed!

alright, i've got a project given to me today that i have not much input nor experience on and with...

Client wants the ultimate PC build for Flight simulator X, so far ive come to understand that its DX9 based and setting it up in x64 windows 7 can be a pain in the rear end, my goal is not to disappoint the client and build him the baddest thing i can put together, input and possible experience from those that have the game and know the quirks about how to get it to 100% working in windows 7 x64 are welcome and needed here!

i was thinking of going with a sandy-E setup and some big SSD's to begin with those parts, the looks of the computer do not matter to him, and i am allowed to watercool the components, would like to stay on stock clocks with everything, i know that sounds kind of boring around here, but in the end, i am the one he will be calling and contacting if something popped up or crashed... id like to take the overclock risk out of that role for now.

Thanks in advance a lot!

FSX needs a LOT of CPU. It uses 80% cpu power, and 20% gpu power. It really likes Intel chips a lot over AMD. An increase of 20fps difference!

Also, it does not take advantage of crossfire or SLI, at all. It sometimes makes it worse.

It allocates max RAM. So get him a lot of RAM.

Recommended build:

i7 2600k
16GB RAM
Nvidia 560ti/570/580 (NOT SLI!)
120GB SSD

FSX takes up a LOT of room. Depending on how many addon aircraft, scenery, utilities, somewhere around 24-80GB, legit. smile.gif

FSX doesn't benefit from SLI/CF at all (no FSX profile under GPU driver). FSX needs CPU power, not GPU power.

jetboy623 got the basic down.

Get a 3930k with 16gb of ram.

I've been simming since 98', the above comments are totally right. FSX can theoretically process 256 threads.

cool, thanks to all three of you so far,

i ve just got to see the new flight sim that MS is pushing out springtime this year, should i keep that in mind at the time of build ?

i E would it be beneficial to jump on the 2011 socket with a 570 for now and later upgrade the gpu towards a newer nvidia card released once he upgrades (if he does) to the new game ?

thanks again so much!

and ill be posting a build log on here for sure about the rig!

Microsoft Flight is free, and many beta testers tell people not to expect it to be any better than FSX. Some say it is worse than FSX (while still disregarding bugs)....

No. It will not be a typical run of the mill simulator.

Its a F2P game with purchasable DLC to get the full experience (kind of like TF2) except a lot worse in regards to the limited functionality of the free game.

The new game will not have the same requirements as the old one at all. The team that made FSX and all previous versions were fired in 08', (FSX is really really badly optimized) and you should not expect to see that kind of performance from the new game.

The only thing that you must, must get is a 6 core processor from Intel. SB-E preferably. FSX loves fast architectures, lots of cores, and lots of MHZ.

That of course if the buyer is willing to pay for that kind of performance.

money is no concern for him, i know thats said often, but he told me so, i know him well enough that i don't have to worry about him not getting the rig at all.

so basicly what i should expect is him sticking to FSX, as he is fascinated with the game, and i as said before dont even look into those games.

sandy - E is a must, i was going to shoot for the non extreme version, as its like 500 bucks more for the extreme, and i doubt that without overclocking he will need the extreme at all.

decent board and ram suggestions are welcome for now, case and such will be decided once i pick GPU and cooling parts,

is it a good idea to put a (as example) 128gb ssd for win7 x64 as main drive and use other hdds for the game files, or should i get just plain drives ?

Also, there are several FSX addons that I would HIGHLY recommend as they add a whole new level of realism to FSX (Just google the name of the addon with FSX after it):

REX
GEX
UTX
ENB
PMDG 737NGX
IRIS military planes

Also, if he is into airline flying, and flying jets, then I recommend he joins a virtual airline. They're usually free, and very fun to fly for. They mock their real-world airlines. Also, make sure he flys on VATSIM (vatsim.net). It's basically where other virtual pilots fly on a network, and there are virtual air traffic controllers.

Between the virtual airline, VATSIM (Which is 100% free as well), and the addons I listed will make his Flight sim experience AMAZING!

If he needs help, whether it's an FSX error on his computer, or he needs help on flying a specific plane, let me know! I'd be more than happy to help! thumb.gif
