Overclock not working?

Thread Starter
I have AMD Phenom II x4 965 at stock 3.4 GHz, and I tried to OC and went to BIOS, the CPU frequency was at 200MHz and the multiplier at 17, resulting in 3400mhz.
I set the multiplier to 18 getting 3600 mhz, that was all good, but when I opened CPU-z I got this:

390

Notice it says 17 Multiplier, and also I took the HT/NB from 2g to 2.2g.

I have this mobo:

i wouldn't push that motherboard very hard..3.8 max..XD may show up..
umm..try doing it with the reference clock biggrin.gif
see if there are any BIOS updates as well

Ahhh okay...

What do you mean reference clock?
In my computer it shows up as 3.6, but not in cpuz!

Also I just bought this:

Will this OC good?

+1. That older mobo doesn't have the power phases to be pushing a big overclock.
Reference clock is another way of saying Bus, FSB, CPU Clock. Yours is currently set to 200 as you are using a multiplier to raise your CPU Freq.

raising the FSB will also alter other compoents such as Ram and CPU/NB or HT Link speed. You may have to alter those voltages or multi's to compensate.

The 990fx-UD3 is a great mobo and will overclock well.

I have the 990FXA-UD3 and I think it overclocks like s dream. On my old board it would take a voltage bump to hit 3.6GHz on my Phenom II 955 C2. The UD3 I can hit 3.65GHz before I need to add voltage. The one complaint I have is a bad temp sensor on the TMPIN3 and goes from -27 to 88c. The UD3 is very popular, it even has a club.

I'm waiting a week for my new G.Skill RipjawsX 1866 and Antec KÜHLER H₂O 620 to show up before I really play.
Enjoy biggrin.gif

There are NO BIOS updates for this board and your processor.  Actually, there is, but there really shouldn't be any.  The low end 3+1 phase VRM setup on this board is not rated for 125W processors and GIGABYTE does not rate other similar boards with 3+1 phase VRM setups for 125W operation at all.  The setup is known for failure and there have been severa recorded incidents on this particular design.

Regardless of whether you are overclocking (in which case it is worse yet) or running at stock, you are damaging your board.  You are risking a serious/catastrophic VRM failure on this board that may damage your board and other system components.  You should stop running this CPU/board combination until you can get a new, more capable board or resort to a serious undervolt/underclock for safe operation.

AMD section mod pioneerisloud could not run this board with a stock speed 95W Athlon II quad with a stock cooler, the VRMs could not do it and went ka-boom.  95W is a push for this board's VRMs, much more 125W.

WOW I did not know it was THAT important, thanks for clearing that up, and the VRM and MOSFET really helped as well thumb.gifthumb.gif

So this board I currently have, I had for more than a year non OC, with 125W cpu, how is that it has not exploded??

And I got the same board as your sig, so I guess I could OC very easily! biggrin.gif

IME the number of phases in a VRM is often over-rated regarding VRM circuit capacity. You can have a 3+1, 4+1, 6+2, 8+2 that all reliably supply 125+ watts to the CPU without any hassles or failures. Sure some mobo VRMs are more limited in capacity than others but just the fact that a mobo has less phases does not mean it's inferior or unable to supply the specified power. When you get into OC'ing and drawing considerably more power by upping the voltage and frequency, then the VRM circuit is under heavier load and more susceptible to overload.
