Again, anything coming from the mouth of Kim Dotcom should really be taken with a bucket load of salt. Wait, that's not enough, a gritting lorry of salt.

I'm on the fence about it myself.

If linking to someone hosting copyrighted material is illegal then perhaps saying to a friend of mine "Hey, I saw some guy on the corner of North St and Common St selling pirated copies of Superman Returns." should also be illegal, since I am pointing my friend in the direction of someone who is breaking the law.

Then how do they get torrent sites? since the copyrighted content doesn't go through the site. Fileserve, Filesonic and all them did remove infringing content from their servers... And copyrighted stuff goes onto youtube all the time..

Actually torrent sites going down are pretty rare. The only I have seen go down is one (can't remember name). ThePirateBay was suppose to go down, but it's still there... not sure what happened. Other than those 2 cases, I can't think of any other sites to go down. Why? Because torrents only contain data about where the illegal content is, not any actual information about the data. Unfortunately, when a torrent server is almost completely hosting illegal content, the agencies get pissed off and go after them. Its a gray law, but don't think for once that a torrent site vs. agencies will win in any court.

Alot of copyrighted stuff does go on Youtube, and from personal accounts, it is almost every single time taken down the next day. If it isn't removed even if it may be copyrighted, it means the company holding the copyright doesn't feel the need to take the content down (free advertising). In the end, Youtube takes down all the copyrighted content it possibly can and the agencies see that and respect them for that.

So what really killed the website like Megaupload? When the agencies got prove that they were messing around with profits from known illegal content. Unlike Youtube, they were advocating piracy, and unlike a torrent website, they actually had pirated data. When that happens the agencies...well just listen to what they have to say...

Ironically, this video is probably copyrighted, but not enforced. LOL Not the nicest video, but represents the agencies pretty good when they get mad. (Click to show)

QFT. It's to find one good sentence about him. I wouldn't touch his business with a mile long stick.

One link was your response that was already mentioned beforehand?

Even if Megabox mattered, which is doesn't because Magaupload broke the law and that alone is why they got shutdown, it's not like Megabox was going to be a smash hit.

The guy who claims:

[...] allowing artists to keep 90 percent of earnings [...] Yes that's right, we will pay artists even for free downloads. The Megakey business model has been tested with over a million users and it works.

but yet "...convicted of credit card fraud, computer fraud, insider trading, and embezzlement..."
