Really, and your free to walk amongst the rest of us? Wow!

The little guy gets screwed by the government, the big oil companies, the insurance companies, the hydro company, the cable company, just to name a few. They sit back and make record profits year after year. You think the little guy should worry about screwing someone else, and making so called moral decisions when he's getting screwed all the time.thumb.gif I'm sure everyone that's screwing him is doing it while making morally correct decisions!rolleyes.gif You can call it whatever you want to. I don't condone it, but I can easily see why it happens, and I couldn't care less.

Uhhh...isn't that the point of a highway? Less regulation = more efficient travel? No stop lights every mile or so? The autobahn in Germany having no speed limit but still being one of the safest roads in the world?

I for one buy less games now because of the DRM(hell I won't even pirate them) in them. I've gotten burned to many times or been stuck playing the "Satisfy the DRM" game before playing the game(just and example). Better yet is playing a bluray on my computer...can't get the software PowerDVD to work properly all the time so had to make mkvs out of my collection(renting is out). Mkv files that work great...or bluray discs that have glitchy software? Get it...the most "legal/legitimate" way is the most problematic...so a lot of people feel like there's no incentive to pay. For the last time (I feel like I owe Gabe Newell money now) PIRACY IS NOT A PRICE PROBLEM (at least not exclusively) BUT A SERVICE PROBLEM! There will always be freeloaders but they will be the minority if you convert through better services and pricing methods, the far greater majority that would buy...but didn't have a POSITIVE incentive to do so before.

It's all quiet simple.

Perfect way to answer this question: Why is there piracy in the first place?

Because people want free stuff, that's the almost only reason, you can try to rationalize all you want and make plenty of excuses, but given the choice almost every one will take the free thing instead of paying for it.

Sigh...and this is why we all will suffer worse and worse DRM and formats that are nearly unusable. Bend over and take it right?

Next up lets ban shovels, plates and loudspeakers because they can be used to inflict bodily harm. They weren't intended for that you say? well then lets ban guns, knives and alcohol because they most certainly were. How ****ed up is a world where you can buy a tool explicitly made for killing people while you cannot buy a tool that can potentially be used for media piracy? The fact that most US based file hosts are shutting down has 0% effect on media piracy anyway, all they managed to do is piss a lot of people off and for a good reason.

Piracy is bad m'kay but what many people fail to realize is that its just an excuse, everybody knows they are full of crap with the numbers they throw around as lost profit including themselves. What they want is your liberty in their palm and if you give them even just a little bit they are that much more determined to get the entire thing.

I don't really get why people pay to download torrents. Never have bothered once using websites like MegaUpload, waste of my money.

You've really not understood the whole argument here have you?

The problem is not the technology, it's how the business was run behind it. That's why many file sharing sites will remain as they abide by the law, but, to me it's pretty obvious Kim Dotcom and his Megaupload cronies thrived on pirated material as it generated a lot of profit.

you're equating speed with safety when that has been proven to not be the limiting factor in the debate. You really should read up on and learn about the Autobahn before using it to support your poor argument. There are many factors that go into it, not the least of which are incredibly strict regulations and what Americans would consider to be "invasion of privacy", something else for them to whine and complain about...

le sigh...after reading the rest of this thread, it's pretty clear there are some scary people that reside on OCN. I guess I shouldn't be surprised, there are people willing to bend the rules to suit them according to each individual's needs. Whether the system is broken or not is irrelevant, it doesn't excuse or justify any actions taken against it. If you want change, then go vote, get a group of people to sign a petition, join up with demandprogress or any other of a hundred places that initiate change and work for the common good. Don't hide behind this facade of "well, if I don't spend 20 bucks but instead steal it studios will REALLY know I'm serious about how terrible their content is" because we all know that's crap. You're lazy, you have a sense of entitlement, and quite frankly you're not different than a bank robber or car thief or murderer. You're CHOOSING to go against what is legal and you don't do anything about it. People like Kim dotcom and yourself are no different except he made a bunch of money doing something illegal and has/is continuing to give legitimate file-sharing sites a bad name and causing them to shut down. Don't get mad at the government for enforcing its laws, get mad at the pirates and get mad at people like Dotcom who ruin games and music and videos for the rest of us.
