Overclocking my AMD FX-6100

Thread Starter
Below are links to my cpu stats, and also you can find my rig and the complete stats below and in my profile.

From the stats I have @ stock settings I feel like I should be able to run Alice 2: Madness Returns on all full settings without a problems. But I guess I was wrong, so I wanted to OC my system a little bit.

Newton Power 1000w PSU

AMD FX-6100 [stock is 3.30GHz]

Asus M5A97 EVO motherboard

Kingston 8GB DDR3 Dual Channel (2x4GB) (HyperX) http://www.kingston.com/us/memory/hyperx/genesis

7 120mm Case fans (liquid coming soon)

AMD ATi Radeon HD 6750 1GB Dx11

Night before last night I had it OC'ed @ these speeds: http://valid.canardpc.com/show_oc.php?id=2208660
When I woke up everything in my room was off, and I walked over to the computer and turned it on and it said "Overclocking Error, Press F1 Blah blah blah". So I pushed F1 and my clock speed was back to 3.30Ghz. So I hit the default key, saved, and went back to windows and everything seems to be fine. What am I doing wrong?

I have the M5A97 normal board and an FX-6100. I used ASUS's AI Suite II and let the program overclock and stress test the system. It got it up to 3.82 and then anything above it would crash.
I'm no expert by any means, but maybe just back it down a tiny bit and see how it plays out for a day or so. From the limited amount I've researched on it, you need the 990 chipset in order to get into the 4GHz range. the M5a97 has the 970 chipset. frown.gif

Hello,

I am trying to overclock my FX6100 but I am not having much luck.

Computer: I have an AMD FX6100, Gigabyte GA-990FXA-UD3,16 Gigs of DDR3 (1600 Mhz), HD 5870, After Market Air Cooler, and Windows 7 64bit.

Problem: I can't seem to get a steady overclock. I do all my overclocking from the BIOS. I don't get any BSODs or anything, I boot into Windows 7, open up CPU-Z and I see the Core Speed bouncing like crazy.. going from 1400 - 4400 Mhz. WTH is going on?

BIOS Settings

4400 Mhz is what I have set to in the BOIS. Core Multilplier at 21X
HTT at 12
RAM at 1600 , 9,9,9,24, Voltage is 1.65
Vcore at 1.387 - 1.4 (No change - CPU still bounce)

Hardware monitor reports decent Core temps even at this speed.. Idling at 36C

I have disabled all that could affect the Core speed but no change.

What am I doing wrong? Why is the Core Speed bouncing? I've never seen that on my Intel Platforms..

BIOS on the board is F5

Did you remember to turn off cool and quiet, etc?

Amd processors by default will downclock when not in heavy use to save power. Turning it off will fix that problem.

raise your ram voltage to 1.65
1.5 is usually only for up to 1600 mhz
