Don't laugh :( Is there anywhere I can get all Windows ME updates?

Thread Starter
Microsoft stopped suppoerting ME in June this year. My buddy dug his old a$$ Gateway 1.4ghz P4 128mb RAM TNT Riva Tuner with nvidia 32mb lol.

Anyway, it runs like shizzle and I want to reinstall Windows ME on it for him. (official, has key on side of case). I think it needs more ram and a video card for XP. I think I have old ram laying around somewhere...

Anyway, where can I get updates/service packs? Preferably not at M$, so I can give him a disk with them on it.

Thanks.

Ouch, before you try to reinstall you may want to try some anti virus sweeps on it to see if that can't patch it up. Try ad-aware, spybot and avg anti-virus.

Now on the other hand, that PC is able to run XP (I've seen it done on lesser hardware actually), it may not be the quickest thing in the world, but it's infinitely more reliable than the dreaded ME. Windows 2000 may also be a great option.

I'm not really sure how updates worked on ME, but if it's anything like the newer OSes then you may not be able to simply save the things to a disk and deliver them.

ME has to be one of teh WORST OSs ever devised. Windows 2000 is fantastic and you should use that. XP of course is the ebst becuse it is fully supported. I've run it on a P2 btw.

You can also get XP lite which is a lite version of it, but a full version wouldn't do any harm.

I'd have to advocate using Win 2k instead of ME. ME was a notoriously bad OS, while 2k is very good and it's also supported with updates until 2010 and then maybe later.

You could probably pick up Win 2k for around $100 or less on eBay.

I remember the red BSOD the Me beta and OS used to make. My eyes essentially were the same color.

I doubt very highly you'll find any Me updates, unless you've DLed a Windows AIO disc, which I don't promote unless you absolutely need the M$ Me updates as a life saving element.

Why not influence your m8 to pay a little extra cash to find one of the enumerated options available as an operating system. Check any OEM site, eBay, or Amazon for a decent price on an unused copy of M$ anything. I'm sure you'll be mildly suprised and you can get the abomination that was Windows Millenium Edition off your friend's computer. He'll thank you for it.

With the hardware he has, he doesn't really need XP. 2000 Pro will be fine. It supports all the games XP does and it's a very stable OS with relative low system requirements. XP can be fairly slow on older hardware, whereas 2K runs well on almost anything.

XP Min Sys Req: 300MHz Intel (or equiv). 128MB RAM. 1.5GB Free HDD Space.
2K Min Sys Req: 133MHz Intel (or equiv). 64MB RAM. 650MB Free HDD Space.

Try and get 2K for cheap somewhere. Much better than ME and less of a resource hog than XP. It's just as secure and stable as XP as well, imo.
