How to mod this...

Thread Starter
Ok so i have some old server fans that plug directly into the wall. I want to mod the cable to put a switch in there somewhere.
problem is....the only wires i've ever messed with was like wayyy back in high school so i don't know if i need certain resistors or what.

and yes, the fans have a ground...it uses an AC power cable (although the ground wire snapped off....gotta fix that lol)

i don't have the specific info on the fans right now (voltage...etc) but i will post that when i get home.

if anyone could help me i'd be extremely grateful. cheers.gif

EDIT:
also, sorry i posted this here but i figure you guys will know more than other sections about this.

If you want an on/off switch, just add an on/off switch smile.gif Make sure your switch has a suitable current and voltage rating as smaller switches may weld together if you're using high currents.

The bulb can be replaced by your fan.

so just a basic switch will be OK?
will i only be cutting out one side of the cable and adding the switch or do i cut the whole wire and wire it entirely to it?

i was looking into the switches last week and there are so many variations i am a bit overwhelmed.
do you know any switches specifically that will work for this?
if i get an example of a legit one i should be good from there.

also thanks for your response smile.gif

Just one side of the cable. The main cable will contain two wires (or three if there is a separate earth, do NOT switch the earth), you only need to switch one of those two. General practice is to switch the LIVE.

Basically any latching switch will do the trick (as opposed to a tactile switch that changes back once you've let go of it).

Here are the main types of switch:
324

SPST is the most basic type. All the others will do the same job as long as you wire up the correct pins.

324

350

If you search for a "mains switch", you will probably find what you're looking for.

awesome, thanks brother
that's all i needed to know to get started on this
i will report back with the results in a week or so.
cheers.gif

EDIT:
actually one more small question:
With this military switch, i would wire up either the pos or negative in to the power, then out of the acc and then wire the ground in (both in/out)?

The description is vague and I cannot see a datasheet. Though it looks like it is designed to switch only 12V DC, which won't fulfil your needs.
