HDD recovery NEED HELP !

Thread Starter
Basically some smart ass kid tried to make a windows installation disk into a USB windows installer ...simple yet when he went to format and start changing the partition on the USB stick did he know what it wasnt the 2GB USB stick it was my 2 TB HDD !mad.gif he said he followed these steps

Run CMD
DISKPART
LISTDISK
SELECT DISK 1
CLEAN
CREATE PARTITION PRIMARY
SELECT PARTITION 1
ACTIVE
FORMAT FS=NTFS

However soon as he hit enter on after typing format fs = ntfs he cancelled it as he realised what he was doing.....So I’m trying to get my hdd back to normal as it was cancelled before it hit 1% formatted. it was cancelled instantly so it should be ok ....i hope ... any ideas how i can sort this out ???

R-Studio should do the trick and has a fairly nice and simple GUI that I only needed about 15 minutes to learn what I needed to do. I've used it before. At $80 it's a bit steep but has paid itself off more than once (considering that one time I almost had a couple weeks worth of work gone).

http://www.r-studio.com/

Otherwise there should be a host of other tools available. I'll try to find another tool I stumbled on that's free and did the trick but does require some knowledge of the command line.

EDIT: Here it is, it's called TestDisk

http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/TestDisk_Download

Takes a bit of learning the commandline/commands available to you but I've recovered partition tables that have been damaged before and files as well.

If you use Windows then download the windows executable, and try to follow the instructions in the how to guides (the how to guides show you how to recover under the *nix shell).

Just get a usb backup drive(should have one anyway) and any copy of Linux. Boot to Linux copy over every thing and just re-install windows.

O&O Disk Recovery.... not sure how much it costs these days.... but it works like a champ to recover deleted files from a formated, drive... even re-partitioned and raw drives...
yeah but a copy of Linux is free and easy to use. There really is no need for something that costs, and might be hard to use.

I assume the MBR and Partition tables have been wiped out so how exactly are you supposed to recover files like that under a live CD. If there's an easy way then it will make my job a million times easier.

From my understanding the original drive is unreadable in it's current state since the MBR and partition tables have been wiped when it was cleaned and reformatted for NTFS. The only way I see is to use a program to read the "raw" data and try to make some sense of it which I know for sure R-studio does (primary windows partition was overwriten by accident when installing a dualboot *nix installation) as does Testdisk (partition table on a USB stick got damaged once and I had to repair it).

Im guessing only the mbr is messed up and its not truly been reformatted (canceled at 1%). Besides it wont hurt to try a live distro and will cost $0 if it works.

Linux won't work because he already altered the partition table. Even if the drive was accessible (which it won't be) I/O functions from a Live cd are DOG slow. His best option is to hook up that drive as a slave and access it through another installation of Windows. Try using a free program called Recuva:

http://www.piriform.com/recuva

If that program doesn't work try EASUS Data Recovery. I've recovered 20 Gigs worth of files from an external harddrive with that program so I'm speaking from experience. If you do ANYTHING to the drive like install something or even run a program you'll greatly decrease your chances of recovery. One time I downloaded recovery software and just having that program in temp then download folder partially overwrote the very files I was trying to recover.

I've used Testdisk and photorec before, and they work well (they're just traditional file carvers), but they don't recover things in any sort of folder structure. You'll just get files that it can get, and it throws them all into a single folder. It takes time, and is on the command line, but its not that difficult.

I would recover the files you want, and then format and reinstall or whatever, rather than trying to restore the disk to how it was before, but thats just me.

I have no experience with the others though.
