It's no secret that the VLIW Radeons have more raw computation performance than Nvidia cards. Heck, the 5870 is as fast or faster than the 7970 in some workloads. That's why they're so good at brute force tasks like Bitcoin mining and password cracking. But when you use real life workloads, EG games, folding, CAD, etc, it's a different story.
