Sounds like you do want one.

He only wants one, so long as it's Apple.

I thought I was the only noticing the inconsistencies in what he says.

I was unaware they weren't allowing you to import ePub 3.0 into iBook Author. Are you sure? Got a link?

I don't overly care whether Apple ends up with a monopoly with textbooks
because I know they'll do it well if it happens, but I don't think it'll happen.

This monopoly dream of mine? I never said I welcome a monopoly just that it wouldn't bother me because I like how Apple does things and the system they've set up is more than fair. I'd gladly pay $15 for a textbook.

I didn't say that. You're both putting words in my mouth. As I said, and will say again one last time: I don't want a monopoly. I wouldn't worry if such came about with Apple, but that's not the same thing as wanting a monopoly. Competition is important.

While authors can still make a choice as to what publishing service they want to use, so in that case there is no "monopoly," do you honestly see an act like locking-down rights to someone's own composition so tightly as a good thing? Again, no one is forcing an author use the service, but since apple has thrown themselves into the educational books system, if it goes the way they intend it to, it's only a matter of time where an author only has two real choices--contract with ibooks and lock their material into ibooks and only ibooks, unable to distribute their work with anyone else, or to not have their educational materials available to their intended audience. This isn't really something that is simple to excuse away, regardless of company loyalty.

This one. I'm sure you've read the thread, most of us are concerned about content being locked behind the great wall, but aside from that there has to be a market first before the stifling can happen.

I think the danger comes in how Apple makes their way into the educational system. They're a huge company with more cash on-hand than the federal government. It would be simple for them to entirely subsidize hardware and software support for any school that thinks they offer a convenient textbook solution, essentially making them the only solution for textbook support.. That is where the danger lies. Hasn't happened yet, but it isn't unlikely either.

Thank you. That is all I'm asking. There is no monopoly. No competition is being stifled. No one is forcing schools to adopt iPads. No one is forcing publishers to create iTextbooks. No one is forcing schools to throw away their old textbooks in favor of iPad versions. No one is forcing authors to use iBooks. They all have more than one option and will for the very foreseeable future.
