Formatted my external, all files gone, help?

Thread Starter
  • Forgot that it was plugged into my USB hub
  • Was an NTFS partition, overwritten by ext4 (was installing Elementary OS)
  • How can I try to get the files back? Recova does not even recognize the ext4 partition, will I have to try software from within linux?

Any help appreciated, some files were not redundant and I would really love to get them back.
Thanks so much guys.

format back and hope for the best, but tbh i think you are screwed unless you have forensic recovery tools (could be talking sheet...i've had 7 beers). there was a post the other day about a forensic tool...have a search thumb.gif

O&O Disk recovery. Will be able to retrieve deleted files from just about all states a drive is in. If it spins up, and can be read... files can be recovered.

For anyone who reads this thread in the future, the program mentioned immediately above was helpful.

However, it was very very slow on a 320GB drive (the process took at least 24 hours), and the restore feature required much more space than 320gb, which was amusing because it tried restoring more data than can exist on the drive.

that is probably because it found latent data that existed across multiple wipes
but glad it worked out for you biggrin.gif
