Currently I am running Sig Rig a overcloked 955 on water to 4ghz and I know I posted this a while ago but I am under the delima or either upgrading to Sandy Bridge 2500k or 2600k or waiting until Ivy-Bridge. Any thoughts? Currently I am able to pretty much run anything but I have been thinking about running a second 6970 or Xfire 7970 and I know there will be a large bottle neck on 1080p -- 1200p gaming with my 955.

What are your thoughts?

1 thing matters: what games do you play?

BF3 at 1080
SWTOR
Skyrium

Thinking about going Eyefinity though. Since I have picked up two u2312HM.s from Dell already.

Your rig will handle it fine at 1080p. Also, eyefinity doesn't put that much more stress on your CPU: it's the GPU that you should upgrade now IF you go for eyefinity. A 2nd 6970 would do you good.

Otherwise... my advice? Wait till the next consoles (and the next gen games) come out, or upgrade just before that. From what I hear, that's around 2013. Outliers like Crysis aside, only then will the big titles challenge your rig, as game devs will finally up the ante. Personally, my 965 and 6850s are doing just fine with anything I run.

if you want to go intel then with ivy bridge sooo close, i would wait and get an I7 3770K if HT will benifit you. but the i5 3570K will be similar to the i5 2500k as ivys best bang for buck gamming cpu. and you might as well wait and see what z77 mobos are released. i only say this as release dates are getting close

When is release?

Just seems like 3 months is kind of far if its still April.

What kind of performance gains would I gain going from 955 to SB vs 955 to IVB

So the difference between 955 and SB i5 2500k isn't that big?

#10 ·
I meant to ask about the performance increase of the CPU

So I guess the real question is, is it worth the wait??

Will both use same socket and MOBO?

#17 ·
They will all allow for Ivy bridge upgrade?

I don't think dual 7870 would be better then dual 6970s...

Back to my orginal posts so only the p67 board mentioned above would allow for a Ivy chip upgrade?

pretty much any lga1155 board will allow you to drop in an Ivy bridge cpu, most will need a BIOS update and then come the gen 3s which support PCIe 3.0

So if upgrading now get a gen 3 with an i5 and wait for ivy bridge then swap out the chip?

you could do that, sell the Sandy and use the money to put towards an Ivy or just wait and get a z77 mobo and an Ivy if your patient
