Little help? 6950 insane voltage spikes

Righto, just a disclaimer, this is (I think) my first forum post ever, so be nice if there are any problems.

700

Basically, I've just started in the whole OCing scene and I'm finding it very enjoyable to get my real money's worth out of my graphics card. But since I'm fairly new to it, there is just one thing that is worrying me and that is the voltage of my card. I'm using a Corsair GS-600 Power supply (if you've searched it on images already, then yes, it's the pretty blue one). In retrospect, I wish I'd sacrificed the eye candy for a higher power rating, but hey, it's my first real rig. Getting off topic.

The problem is that while I'm overclocking my 6950 1GB, I'm noticing very alarming voltage spikes in MSI Afterburner. I really don't want to put too much load on my power supply and I'm fairly certain that the card isn't supposed to even be able to reach 1.992 V. Can anyone put my mind to rest, is this a software glitch, nothing to be worried about or should I start looking into this seriously?

Thanks

I think it's lying to you. I think if it weren't your gpu would be dead. However the voltage may still be spiking to a high amount, just definitely not that high. Best way is to get a fast multi-meter out and check.

are you running GPU-z in the background at all? my 5850 would shoot up to 1.67v if I had GPU-z running as well.

I had the exact same problem with my 6950 when i had it.

If you searched on google for an answer you probably saw my post on another forum. I couldn't find anyone else with the problem.

I just ran it and it was fine, Even ran a quite nice overclock on it with some more voltage.

Is your card a VTX card? that was my brand of card.

Yes, actually it is a VTX. I think I did see your post, but it was pretty much the only one I could find. And I have GPU-z but it isn't running. I'm confident it's not dangerous but I just wanted to check that someone else hadn't had the same problem and my card was about to melt down or something tongue.gif I guess it's just the VTX3D brand that has the problem, if it dies on me then I'll just have an excuse to buy a different (maybe better) card.

It's off topic but out of curiosity, what did you manage to OC the card to?

I can't remember what the voltage was exactly but i held 970 on the core around 1.2v i think. I think i could of got up to 1000-1050 with some more voltage. I did try it a few times and it ran ok but the temps were a bit high for me.

Can't remember what i had on the memory.

Anyway, glad you got it figured out and Sorry it took me so long to reply again.

Try the latest  MSI Afterburner 2.2.0 Beta 11.

Make sure you have hardware acceleration disabled everywhere.
