Small, Quiet, and cool case recommendation

Thread Starter
Hi,

I am currently running a FT02, I am planning to go smaller and sleeker.

I was hoping to get some suggestions for cases. I would not mind going micro atx if it's necessary.

Main importance on compact + quiet.

Thanks biggrin.gif

what kind of components are you looking at? how much OCing do you intend on doing? do you intend on going liquid? have you thought about a TJ08-E if you aren't going liquid?
Here are 2 matx cases I considered them both when looking for a cool running yet quiet case ended up with the fractal design because of the front door (thought it looked cleaner and thought it would make it quieter)

Fractal Design Define Mini

I also read good things about the antec mini p180 but I'm not sure that it is made anymore according to newegg

Well that surely limits your choices more than you might believe at first but lucky for you the only choice is also an excellent choice.

I strongly recommend the Fractal Design Define Mini. Fractal Design has been making a name for themselves in the enclosure market and it all started with the success of the Define R2 & R3. To go smaller than your current case, you have to go mATX to see any significant gain in compactness.

I personally have a Lian-Li PC-A04 which is also mATX but being all-aluminum does not dampen sound as much as the steel Fractal Design cases do. I have personally built rigs in the Define R3 and Mini and can testify to their build quality and silence.

Have a look at the Fractal arc midi.
It's probably not going to be as quiet as some cases others mentioned if you're air-cooling but if you ever wanted to try water-cooling it would allow you to do so quite easily. biggrin.gif
Put a 240mm rad or two in there with some low RPM fans attached and it'll be whisper quiet.
I'm biased though because the only thing stopping me from swapping down to one is I'd have to buy a new rad or two. tongue.gif

I am looking for the same...and I have it narrowed down to:

ATX:
  • FD Arc Midi
  • Corsair 550D (Feb release)

mATX:

  • FD Arc Mini
  • FD Define Mini

The FD Define R3 is out for me since I don't like the fact that the hard drive cage is not reconfigurable...and most corsair models are out for me because I don't like 200mm fans (or LEDs)...or paying to swap out component in a brand new case. smile.gif

The new 550D looks nice...but also looks very large compared to the Arc Midi. Frankly, I'll probably just drop in a single video card and three hard drives so anything bigger than mATX is probably overkill for me...but I am driving the search by the motherboard at the moment, which I have yet to choose. smile.gif

It's fairly close to the size of the midi. like 0.4 inches taller, about an inch longer, and 0.3" slimmer. I took a risk and pre ordered it. It's got some features I was wishing for in the Arc Midi, i.e. fully modular hdd bays, filtered side panel, blank-outs for both top and side vents, and dampening. Dampening is minor as that can be added, but the other stuff was a big draw. It's only about $30 more than the Arc so I figured I'd give it a try. Ive never owned a Corsair so not sure what to expect.

Corsair lists the dimensions as: 20.9" x 8.7" x 19.5"

It's not exactly clear to me what is height - 20.9 or 19.5, but the Midi is only 18.1" tall...so the 500D is at least 1.4" taller...if not 2.8" taller...but if I assume that the 550D is only 19.5" tall, the comparison looks like this:

http://www.sizeasy.com/page/size_comparison/33957-Arc-Midi-vs-550D
(click the front view tab)

Not a huge difference, but it does seem appreciably taller and deeper...and thinner...which is 3 out of 3 bad for me. I'd rather have wider and shorter. smile.gif

Edit: one more size comparison, with all four cases mentioned above: http://www.sizeasy.com/page/size_comparison/33961-550D-vs-Arc-Midi-vs-Arc-Mini-vs-Define-Mini-vs-Wine-Bottle

cheers,
Scuba
