LED Backlight yes or no?

Thread Starter
i read thru the sticky threads and googled the hell out of this subject. it seems to be a coin flip on if having an LED Backlight monitor is better than CCFL. was hoping to get some opinions from you guys.

I am looking at getting a 27inch monitor and will use it for gaming. I would like to stay around $300 if possible. any suggestions would be great.
Here are 2 monitors I am looking at

samsung CCFL

IMO, It's no contest. You -don't- want LED lighting. I have both an LED backlit (TN) and a CCFL backlit (IPS). Now, perhaps it's the panel difference, but the LED display is simply too "cool" and washed out in my experience. I've fiddled with it and fiddled with it. Also, being edge-lit means colors that go the full height of the monitor actually change shades about half way up, and get progressively darker as we go. It's .. painful to look at.

On the bright side, they do generally use less power, but not by much.

LEDs will outlive CCFLs, and won't dim as quickly over time. My parents' LCD monitors that have CCFL backlights are easily half as bright as they were 8 years ago (that said, these monitors are on an awful lot, nearly 24/7)

Thats purely the panel difference. Most manufacturers take advantage of the LED hype to sell low quality panels. I have an LED IPS and a CCFL TN and color wise they are basically the same.

And CCFL monitors are edge lit as well. They use an acrylic (or some other clear plastic) plate with 2 cathodes on each end, and use a diffusing sheet to spread the color evenly across the screen.

i tested the LED lit VE278Q and CCFL lit VE276Q sitting side by side on my desk for a night. image quality was practically identical, though overall i preferred the warmer tone of the CCFL 6Q. i ended up keeping the 6Q but would have been happy with either. i wouldn't stress very much over the method of backlighting, there are many other factors that have a much more significant impact on image quality.
