Can I use 3rd party 2.5" hard drive with xbox 360?

Hi Guys,

I'm looking to get a hard drive for my 360, I have the new 4gb Slim model. So what is the hard drive they sell? Is it just a 2.5" hard drive in an enclosure? Is there a way to pick your own hard drive and get it working?

Yes to a certain extent.
You can use either 250gb or 320gb in the slim but you have to buy specific models.

Or...

You can mod with jtag or reset glitch hack and use any 2.5in of your choice. I just bought a 500gb for my fat 360. The catch with this is you can't do xbox live. With this hack it's as simple as putting the hard drive in and having the dashboard format it.

It has to be a WD Scorpion, not sure if black or blue, or both. I think the max capacity is 250GB or 320.

You must have one of these harddrives in the right size (or higher):
- WD Scorpio Series BEVS/BEAS
- WD Scorpio Blue Series BEVS/BEVT
- WD Scorpio Black Series BEKT/BJKT
- WD VelociRaptor Series

Any of those drives will work for you.

If you use one of those models can you still be banned from xbox live?

I just (yesterday as a matter of fact) put a 320 GB Western Digital Scorpio Blue BPVT retail hard drive from Best Buy (because they actually had the best price) in my launch (fat) xbox. This would have worked in a slim as well. For the fat xbox I had to take the 20 GB HDD out of the hdd caddy, and replace it with the 320 GB HDD.

It was the 20 GB model. I play on Xbox Live and haven't been banned. You have to use hddhackr to flash the xbox hdd firmware, and after that you are golden.

I followed the instructions from here:
Put a WD Scorpio in the 360

That link even provides you with all of the programs and firmware you need.

Be warned that if you have a fat xbox, you will need a torx 6 and torx 10 to take hdd caddy apart.

I have also brought this xbox (launch xbox) back from the rrod. It now runs cooler, quieter, and faster.

I've seen some of these replacements come with Toshiba hard drives and I'm wondering if you can replace it with one of these instead of the traditional Scorpio series, as everyone seems to recommend.

The Microsoft standard drives have some kind of security sector in the firmware of the drive. hddhackr has only been programmed to work with the aforementioned WD drives. It actually uses the firmware from the Microsoft drives and flashes it to the WD drives in essence turning the WD drive into a Toshiba. It actually when you reboot your rig shows in the bios as a Toshiba drive. I have been using a WD blue 250 gig drive for a few years now and have never had any problems or being banned. I believe that as long as the firmware checks ok then Microsoft cannot tell the difference but that is my opinion.
