No, just because it was the case with the last gen consoles it doesnt mean it's aways going to be like that.
Some people are forgetting the point of a console.

It doesn't necessarily have to be powerful. Power efficiency is a bigger and more important factor than raw performance of a console.

The way they can code the games fully utilizing the hardware without the use of slow APIs pretty much negates the need of strong hardware.
I assure you a console manufacturers main goal is to maximize performance without affecting power consumption much rather than the other way around. If you looked into the graphics card more carefully, you would know this.

Or do you guys think its coincidence that the HD 6670 they have chosen has an almost identical power consumption as the GF 7900 that they used in the 360?
The 7900 was rated around 50 Watts while the 6670 is rated at 60W... theres a reason they didnt pick a 200W HD 6950.

so imagine what devs could do if they used a a graphics card that is more than 6 times as powerful.

If they must stay within 200W even then going for 5770 + die shrink would make more sense in my opinion. Ok - 5770 is not that powerful card either but it is good enough step up from 6670 cards. With 5770 you can pull off 3x1 1920x1080 eyefinity if you skip the AA and tune down the shaders a bit. Now if they would code specifically for that skipping the API I imagine they might even be able to pull off pretty decent quality even at these resolutions.

Ok - they probably dont care about eyefinity as its a console, however some of the new 3D gimmicks could really use the gfx processing power nevertheless.

GFX card aside - I hope they use at least decent amount of RAM in their next gen console. 4+ Gb would be a good start plus 1+ Gb of GFX RAM.

The proper gameplay isn't as good as that but seeing as you can walk around the car and interact with it I would say that this is still gameplay.

6770 in a PC is not the same as a 6670 in a console.

With what console developers can do on consoles expect much better graphics on the console compared to a PC with the same hardware.

As has been pointed out already, look at what the super outdated consoles can do today.

Next gen consoles are going to have insane graphics, dare I say better than what my sig rig can produce.

PC hardware has always been more powerful, but compared console hardware to PC is like comparing apples to oranges.

If this rumour is accurate then the only thing that will save this low-cost design is the memory bandwidth and the amount of it.

Xbox360's memory bandwidth between the CPU, GPU and Memory was 22.6Gb/sec. It's actually very impressive in comparison to a High-end PC.

-- A modern PC has PCI-E with 8Gb/sec [4Gb/sec bi-directional bandwidth]
-- Main Memory at 25Gb/sec
-- VRam at an average of 100Gb/sec

It's a lousy architecture.
The biggest problem of course is the interface to the GPU; the PCI-E bus.
Xbox360's "bus interconnect" is 3x wider than that. Kind of puts things in perspective really.

The PC is a donkey with a rocket booster attached to it.
That's all it is.

If Memory has been highlighted by Developers as being the most important, Microsoft is likely to have done this:

Priority 1:
Memory bandwidth and amount
Priority 2:
CPU
Priority 3:
GPU

If the Memory has therefore taken precendence, then this is an extremely good move by Microsoft (from my point of view).

An Xbox720 with a highly customized Radeon 6670 GPU that has access to 4Gb of GDDR3 256bit @ 1100Mhz gives 70.4Gb/sec over the 512Mb @ 700Mhz of 22.6Gb/sec memory the Xbox360 had.

Further, if it's an SoC design, that means the CPU is also bus interconnected at 70.4Gb/sec to the GPU, and Main memory.


If that sort of thing is happening then I am afraid to say that the least of the problems the PC is getting today with Game Developers will only get a lot worse; and much much worse than that if the TDP is 150w.

So basically an Xbox is made for 1 main purpose, and that is running games, with maybe the dashboard on low priority mode.

A PC is running 10x the amount of processes, along with a 64-bit OS, and a game on top of that. Plus you could be encoding video, audio, or have 10 web pages open and a photo gallery simultaneously.

Now that is a very simple and plain way of looking at the differences, but it rings true.

So therefore a AMD 6670 1gb GPU in a console with custom architecture/DX11, will actually do quite well, whether the games will be 1080p @30 fps or 720p @60 fps I don't know but if the games are coded(not upscaled) at that resolution or somewhere in-between with lots of AA/AF then I think through optimization, we will see some amazing developments, Unreal Engine 4 looks good!
