[IGN] Xbox 720 to be 6 times as powerful compared to current gen systems - Page 27

No my numbers are accurate.

PCI-E 16x has a 8Gb/sec aggregate bandwidth (with it being 4Gb/sec bi-directional).

Dual Channel PC3-12800 at 1800Mhz hits about 25Gb, and PC3-16000 will hit about 33Gb/sec in terms of overclocking the memory.

Vram average is about 100Gb/sec; but I guess 150Gb/sec this year would be about right.

If a 28nm Xbox720 had 500watts to work with in 2013 it would destroy any High-end PC in 2011 by a factor of 3 and probably even higher than that.

"Furthermore, it has been proven that PCIe bandwidth does NOT bottleneck a GPU significantly. A x16 PCIe 2.x connection more than enough for any current video card.
Edited by DuckieHo - Today at 7:17 am"

That's why they use PCI-E in a games console... but they don't, do they.
PCI-E would affect the performance of the CPU, GPU and Main Memory. I doubt it's "insignificant" at all either.

That's why Physics, Fluid Dynamics and the like have never taken off in PC gaming. The PC architecture simply cannot do it without 1000 watts, stupidly powerful GPUs with 264Gb/sec bandwidths and SLI/Crossfire designs.

The PC is a dead-end.
It just doesn't know it yet.

Xbox360's memory bandwidth between the CPU, GPU and Memory was 22.6Gb/sec. It's actually very impressive in comparison to a High-end PC.
-- A modern PC has PCI-E with 8Gb/sec [4Gb/sec bi-directional bandwidth]
-- Main Memory at 25Gb/sec
-- VRam at an average of 100Gb/sec
It's a lousy architecture.
The biggest problem of course is the interface to the GPU; the PCI-E bus.
Xbox360's "bus interconnect" is 3x wider than that. Kind of puts things in perspective really.
Your numbers are off.

A modern PC has PCIe 2.0. This is a bidirectional 4Gb/s per link. GPUs are generally connected with either x8 (32Gb/s) or x16 (64Gb/s) link. [Not 4Gb/s]

Main Memory of DDR3-1333 in dual channel is 170Mb/s while DDR3-1600 is 204Mb/s. [Not 25Gb/s]

VRAM bandwidth of a GTX580 is 1500Gb/s while a HD7970 is 2100Gb/s. [Not 100Gb/s]

Furthermore, it has been proven that PCIe bandwidth does NOT bottleneck a GPU significantly. A x16 PCIe 2.x connection more than enough for any current video card.

You don't need ridicules wattages to power something more powerful then a 6670. We can take the recent alienware x51 as an example. That can with options have a 330w power brick and a GTX555. Some speculate that it could run a GTX 560 ti. Then about people wining about cost need to remember that we are not talking about discrete graphics cards but a custom gpu made just for the Xbox. Even if they would base the design on a much more powerful chip like the Southern Islands GPU's does not mean that it would cost them as much as a 7950.

I can't see how using a 6670 as a base would make any sense what so ever when there are so many better options around (and I'm not talking just power).

Edit: typos

Where are you coming up with your numbers? You don't know what you're talking about.

* You are wrong in your PCIe numbers since:
1) PCIe is full duplex... that means it can send and receive simutaneously. You do not cut the bandwidth in half since it is NOT half-duplex.
2) x16 PCIe 2.x is 64Gb/s.

You are wrong in the memory numbers because you already stated their bandwidth.
1) PC3-12800 is 12800MB/s or 100Gb/s.... dual-channel doubles it.
2) PC3-16000 is 16000MB/s or 125Gb/s.... dual-channel doubles it.

..... are you confusing GB/s vs Gb/s vs Gbps? When talking about networks or interconnects, you generally talk in terms of gigabit and not gigabytes .

Gaming computers are typically a lot faster than gaming consoles but consoles have the advantage of being specifically developed for. It's almost impossible to have a game coded specifically for every computer setup and would be way too time consuming so consoles will always have that advantage. When someone is creating a game for an xbox 360 they're going to be coding it for only that specific hardware so they're going to most likely get better results for that hardware than a similar specced computer would.

Understood, I'm just talking about noticeable quality differences by consumers. A PC may by 10 times more powerful, but most people would agree a PC game doesn't appear to be 10 times better than a console game.

This is just sad. Its not coming out until fall 2013 and they're throwing a low end gpu. Computers will be 15x faster by then. Are they trying to kill off consoles?

True... but how do you quantify quality? wink.gif

Then again, most consumers can't tell the difference between 720p and 1080p either.

If this is true, then it's just sad. When the xbox 360 was released it had hardware very similar to high end pc's at the time. Now however it would have hardware similar to only a 4-5 year old high end pc.

They also took a huge loss in production which they never got out off until 4-5 years later and are mainly making profit off marketplace stuff since their fail design kept giving the red ring of death most of it went into repairing consoles
