Microsoft know people don't want to spend a lot of money on tech, the other day I showed an "average" consumer a nVidia Quadro 6000 and he couldn't see why anyone would spend £6.5K on a graphics card when you can get a different card for £25 (nVidia 8400GS) that does basically the same thing. Most people don't care about specs and they just want something cheap that works. If MS ends up making a console with similar specs to an average OCN rig it will cost £800+ (at a loss) and no average consumer is going to spend that much just to play games.

Then again, most consumers can't tell the difference between 720p and 1080p either.

Sad, but true. In fact, I'll regularly pick 720p YouTube over 1080p YouTube, because it streams quicker and the difference isn't significant enough for me to notice (especially after compression artifacts etc).

Twice the required power doesn't mean twice the visual quality (or at least, wow factor), but having more performance allows you to continue to eke out those decent looking graphics for longer, and keeps developers striving for better graphics for longer.

The difference between a 6670 and a 6770 would be huge. In fact, it's almost approaching the difference between the X1900 and the 6670 itself... Which again, is similar to the 6770 -> 6870.

Ultimately, the 6850 is sitting at about £100 per card right now. In three to four years time, a card of the same performance will be half that price (rough approximation of Moore's Law translated to GPUs). It'll also be more efficient (general computing trends towards efficiency).

So, why would they not put something like that in a next gen console, unless it premiers this year? As we haven't had a hint of it, I don't think it'll be premièring this year, do you?

Nuff said? About what? This thread isn't about PC performance relative to consoles...

Also, fail graph is fail. I like how the blue part just says "Console". Which console then? All three of them are different. And PC GPUs were not nearly double what the 360 or PS3 was in 2005...

umm i think the 6670 is a placement technical detail not the finalized techinical details since the rest of the specs of the 720 hasn't been introduced as of yet, we need to wait till later on this year to see what the actual specs are or early next year redface.gif

Guys, Microsoft have to factor in Kinect assuming they will have Kinect or improved Kinect on every console as standard. This means they have to find around $50-70 that they didn't have to with the Xbox 360. GPU gets the bump. Plus they may try to hit $300-350 launch.

I still think by the time this goes into production it will have a GPU equivalent to a 6770-6850. If not it seems a waste to launch another box even factoring the gains of less API etc.

Its pretty much accepted the next gen consoles will be 600+ at launch... I'm predicting >700. What they're gonna have to put in these monsters to get them to do what they want them to is going to require much better hardware.

You guys keep going on about gaming gaming gaming.

Well guess what... The next gen consoles are gonna have to be able to :

web browse

stream movies(current 360 does it but not well)

use skype (xbox 720)

And a lot of other things our computers already do.

Its going to require a different type of operating system (MS has already said its 720 is going to be based off of windows 8)

Its going to need a lot of serious hardware or its just going to look like a low budget PC. Sorry.

BizzareRide weighs in!

If Microsoft sticks with thermal specifications of the original Xenon chipset which put total board power at 200w, then a 6670 is not the target hardware.

Realistically, on the 28nm lithography, expect a Thames Pro die with 1408SPs or a HD 7850 Pro assuming a 200w TDP.

20nm tapes out this year, a full year ahead of the assumed launch date for their console and would be in production before Fall 2013.

If they go with a 20nm chip initially, expect a bit more still.

remember - consoles run directly on hardware, pcs dont. So in essence the 6670 will still be a tremendous upgrade.

Really? Xbox 360 $400. Only the PS3 dared to go $600 and we know how that played out despite being a bargain on paper with a bluray in 2006. I would say $400 is around the price point.

I agree if they want a huge jump in performance over the existing consoles and then add the Kinect and PS move/eyetoy on top then it could push the price to around $600. I just don't think Microsoft or Sony would dare to launch a $600 console again, only up to $450 pushing it.

Would actually like MS and Sony to have a look in 2014. 6670 will give 360 devs twice the power of the Xbox 360 but is that enough? It's not bad but I hope they don't bump the gpu down and try to aim for 6850 level of gpu from the 7000 series
