[IGN] Xbox 720 to be 6 times as powerful compared to current gen systems - Page 34

You guys don't realize that games are way more optimized on consoles than they are on PCs. If they were to put a 6950 in the new Xbox, it would blow the PC equivalent out of the water in terms of performance, simply due better optimization.

well basically.. yes.

Why?

Direct to metal programming - remember that phrase.

If you program GPU direct to metal its performance is increased so much so it would make you wonder why PC's don't do it.

Why dont PC's use direct to metal programming? they are all different and you have to have cloned hardware to program this way. Thats why consoles are non upgradable and for example all xbox 360's have identical hardware.

also the inverse of this is for example an emulator - if you were to run an emulator for current generation console on a PC it would take a computer that is WAY more powerful to pull off that direct to metal emulation.

Why is power draw such a serious concern...?

Chances are the people who don't want a 600W+ PC don't want to pay a massive electricity bill so they get 150-300W consoles instead.

On the plus side, it can double as a heater in winter.

Also the next xbox is FAIL if it is only 20% faster than Wii U, which is out the end of this year with the xbox launching almost a year later.

Speaking of that, why are there no new NASCAR games for PC (I am not talking about iRacing)

Also, if they made the consoles so that i could hook up a keyboard and mouse, a real keyboard (Not one of those 5 button pad things) i would willingly buy a console and use it, but i can play for hell on a controller for FPS. And i do mean without the 80 dollar adapter kit thing.

I would do it because i could actually play games with my friends, but i doubt that this will happen, and will not hold my breath

This cannot be a serious answer -_-

It has to be upscaled because a TV set cannot just handle any resolution you throw at it, so you render everything to a render target that is around 1080x600, then it is stretched to either 1280x720 or 1920x1080 so that any HDTV can handle it. 1920x1080 is about 2.5 times as many pixels as 1080x600, so you can imagine how much more sharp games would look if they could all run at a native 1080p. If MS skimps on the GPU and goes with a 6670 I can see the console at least supporting a native 1080p, however, there won't be much more than that. If MS goes with something more powerful like a 7870 or 7930, then I can see not only native 1080p, but also higher poly models, more detailed textures, more particle effects (more realistic ones as well), the possibility of better water reflections or refraction, more detailed shadowing, and possibly even tessellation.

Yes I think many people understand that fine. Even though a 6670-equivalent will run much faster in a console than a PC, it's still an extremely low-end GPU choice for a console that isn't released for almost 2 more years, and then has to last another 6-8 years.

Just because it may be based on the 6670 that doesn't mean it will be the 6670 exactly. The GPU in the Xbox 360 wasn't (as far as I can remember) a spec for spec copy of the original. It will be tailored to the needs of the system. Also considering no ones knows what other specs it will boast or even if this is factual information, I think everyone's jumping the gun a bit here.

In any event, I think you'll be surprised what developers could get out of it. I'd rather have seen a HD6770 in there though.

You are very wrong, I can name quite a few off the top of my head.

Try going over to Beyond3D sometime. They have a rather large native resolution list for games on PS3 and Xbox 360.

Christ, I remember Nascar Racing 4. Never played those games seriously, I would mainly end up doing 5 or so laps and then turn around to collide with other cards just to watch how they did collision effects and physics.
I believe the PS3 had keyboard and mouse support (Although it may have needed an adapter,) but the games didn't. I remember when UT3 came out PS3 users were going all crazy over how they could have custom maps and mods as well as the game having kb/m support when hooked up to a PS3. If they can get the next-gen consoles to support keyboard and mouse on the get-go as well as getting devs to feature mod support on the console versions, I would take interest as well.
