Same with nVidia's/AMD's renaming schemes? I know people that had 8800GT's and bought 9800GT's looking for a performance gain!
Why do companies do free giveaways? To make them look like a better business and to get people to buy from them, also for the product to actually get bought and talked about.
Why aren't they making cars like they used to? 'cause the cheaper they make them the more profit they gain, and even better when the car dies in 5-10 years and the same family has to buy a new one!
Everything today is about money, it's so stupid.. I wish that people would just get over it and have good lives.
That is my rant for the day over with! biggrin.gif
+1 pretty much yeah tis' a mad sad world

Err... I've read a lot of posts (not all though), but it seems to me that a lot of people are taking this HD 6670 for granted. Really ? I don't think Microsoft would be that stupid. Anyway, I've already read somehwere that the next Xbox will have an equivalent to the HD 6950, which is much more like it.

Consider this: if the rumours that the first chips are being produced to go to the dev kits are correct, they might still probably be at 40nm, but that does not really matter to a developer, they can even have the console hardware inside a PC case. The devs will have a year or slightly more to learn the console and start making games for it so that you have a reasonable collection of games when the console launches in the 3rd quarter of 2013. By the beginning of 2013 32nm or even 28nm production should be well under way with very reasonable yields as compared to now, so the CPU and GPU for the console itself will probably be built using newer tech than the hardware the devs will get this year.

Judging the HD 6670's TDP as being fit for the new console compared to the Xbox 360's GPU TDP is useless at this moment.

There is one thing that has changed since the current generation consoles were released though: before, a PC's graphics card, even a top of the line one, was normally a single slot affair (there were some exceptions at the time already though). In 2006 Nvidia launched the 90nm, faster than the dual GPU 7900 GTX2, 8800 GTX, which came with a dual slot cooler, it was at the time a power hungry card at 185w TDP. Now the 8800 GTX's power consumption is not much more than what you have come to expect from a midrange graphics card - the GTX 460 / 560 has a 160w TDP, the GTX 560ti has a 180w TDP. Consoles were left behind, they can't compete with this power envelope and still make a console with an affordable power supply, with a relatively small case for the living room, and with decent accoustics.

So, yes, they will have to compromise, they will no longer be able to provide a GPU that will be at the top of its game when it launches, but not to an HD 6670 level.

It will be very interesting to see where this goes.

The parts they use do not deviate very much from the parts they are based off of(right?) so it's not like they are redesigning the transistor. The case sure as hell can't take 6+ years to design. I'm just thinking about what's in the current xbox and how run-of-the-mill stuff it has. The motherboard? Nothing special there. The CPUs are usually based off of consumer parts aren't they? Even a spec CPU couldn't take that long to design. They have DVD drives in them. Yippee. Is it the low level software and crap that takes awhile to write? 7 YEARS? WHY?! I'm trying to look at it from a production stand point and just can't see why something so generic has such a long development process unless they do it on purpose to milk the current generation.

Simple..

Why would microsoft bring out another console when the 360's are still selling like hot cakes with no new competition, + i know many many people buying new xbox's because their old ones have gone through the red ring of death.

Your 100% right they could easilly have brought out another console but the simple matter is it makes no buisness sence to release new tech when your still milking it from the old one, Plus the margins microsoft are making on the slim line version is insane!!! old cheap tech in a pretty new case and still flying of the shelves for £300 here in uk!

and considering the price of HDDs at the moment I would consider this to be about the right price.

Hence why I said almost half the price. And Kinect isn't really 2005 tech.

Console development time isn't about the hardware -- that's the easy part. The hard part is making good tools, documenting the tools, developing a suitable OS, determining what kinds of software features the console should have, what kinds of "non game" apps it can run, etc.

The platform needs to last for years, so the software development platform can't be anything but good. Otherwise you end up like the PS3.
