The old consoles had good hardware but didn't cost insane amounts. Do you know why? Because unlike PC's they where mass produced as a single unit making the them much chapter to make. The average Joes have had the money to put down on consoles in the $250-500 range for the past 20 or more years so what exactly has changed.

The avaetage Joe doesn't know what a GPU is, let alone frames per second.

I hate the way everyone here is taking the piss out of the HD 6670.

Do you have no idea how much optimisation goes into every Xbox 360 game already? I think they said the current Xbox's graphics chip is similar to a 7600GT, yet it still plays many of the games we play on PC at half the quality. That's still really good for a console with a 7600GT equivalent card.

Did you even bother to read this thread? It has mentioned time and again that the chip in the Xbox 360 is a version of the radeon x1900's chip and is about as fast as a 7800 GTX not a 7600 gt. And the current gens games are run on much lower then half PC graphics as they use less then half the pixels of a average PC game 1080p vs 720p as well as lower texture res and less of all the other effects as well and that's not even taking AA and AF into account.

I've tried going even further but why would you want such a low resolution that you need to sit 50 feet away in order to "enjoy it" anyway? I'd rather have my 23" 1920x1080 screen and sit really close to it love the picture quality. I think that resolution matters a lot more than a big part of console gamers think, I guess it's because they have never actually seen even 1920x1080 on a real 1920x1080 monitor. When I showed my cousin how BF3 looks on my computer, his jaw dropped instantly, loved to see his reaction.
Anyway looking at a 720p vs 1080p comparison video on a 720p monitor will not tell you much, as obviously you're still looking at 720p instead of 1080p. I personally hoped for the next gen consoles to be powerful and worth my money to buy, but it seems that they're going to be rubbish in my eyes and therefore I'm very disappoint :-/

You would be a fool to think nothing will be done about power consumption, that is not really a concern here. The oldest Xbox 360 consumes about 170W in the most intensive games. Jasper barely goes above 100W, and Valhalla stays below. Again, I am not sure what your arguement is here.
7800GTX consume 200W under load? lol.
The PS3 was based on a cutdown version of the 7800GTX, 7800GTX TDP = 84W.
The X360 was based on a modified and downclocked ATI X1800XT, X1800XT TDP = 113W, so the Xenos TDP should be <100W.
http://www.geeks3d.com/20090618/graphics-cards-thermal-design-power-tdp-database/

HD6850 consume way too much power for a console, unless modified/downclocked, my argument was:- 1) Resolution doesn't matter in consoles as much as PC because of viewing distance. 2) HD6850 TDP too much for a console. thumb.gif

Secondly, that chart is very accurate for something that'd depend on the person more than anything..Just like how some people can see the difference between 40-60fps and others can only tell when it dips below 30.
You are correct about the custom version, but how much lower it'll consume power wise? the launch X360 and PS3 were heavy and bulky and consumed ~200W at launch, I think for a console the max TDP for the GPU should be ~75W.

As for the the chart I don't want to argue about that, yes some people can see better details than others at the same distance, but not by much, and that my opinion. Same thing goes for people who claim they can notice the difference between 30 or 60 or 120 FPS. thumb.gif

You can get a 7970 within consoles when you remove the stuff consoles don't need and under clock. You have a 190w 7970 that will then consume under 150w and 50w left over for the CPU if we consider last gen power constrains.
There is no evidence that will suggest consoles TDP will be limited to 200w like before. I'm hoping it will increase linearly, but expensive cooling may limit what is possible.

HDD, Motherboard, USB ports, OD, Bluetooth, cooling fan ...etc will probably consume 50W by themselves.
By putting a 150W GPU in a console you'll probably look at round two of the RRoD tales.

I think consoles are like laptops they shouldn't get bigger and bulkier, 200W is max IMO.

The question is:- Do you need 1080p on a console??
When you game on a PC you need to sit very close to the monitor (like 2-3 feets) and therefore you'll apperciate the high resolution.
Consoles are meant to be played on HDTV, therefore you'll sit at least 5 feets away, therefore you don't need much resolution.
In my situation, I have a 37" 1080p HDTV and I sit 6.5 feets away, according to the chart below I barely notice the difference between 720p and 1080p. thumb.gif
410

The 6850 consumes around 110-120w, at 40nm. They could shrink it to 28nm.

I can easily notice the difference between 720p and 1080p and I sit around 8 feet away from the TV (which is only 32").

I don't think using a over 100w GPU is an impossibility. The CPU and other parts can be made much more power efficient then when the last gen came out. That and the fact that +250W power bricks are available.

RROD was simply a cause of bad design, and had nothing to do with the hardware or whatever. Stop fooling yourself. 6850 is more than doable, so is a 7970. Modifications can easily be done.

And what exactly makes you think the size will increase? I am getting dumber and dumber by reading these posts.
