"The report goes on to claim that, "the power behind the next Xbox will be a PowerPC CPU that is married to an ATI Southern Islands GPU, or modified 7000 series." It adds that the console is unlikely to ship at the end of 2012, with full production gearing in December of this year. "
Modified 7000 series sounds very plausible as opposed to 6670 , and anyway the GPU ill be customized so it won't be directly comparable to any PC GPU.

This is likely a custom chip that even though based on the 6670, may have some aspects from the 7000 series.
Something to do with cost and heat savings. That to me makes the most sense.

So a rebranded 6000 series GPU with 7000 series extra's, custom built into a new console with an AMD CPU, I suppose that comes across as a lot better than what this article is trying to suggest.

By the time these new consoles come out, PC hardware will be 20 times more powerful than them (the new ones, not the current gen).
Consoles will never catch up to the awesomeness that is PC gaming.

sooo tru mate

Read this too

As i said before this is actually plausible beacuse there is no chance in hell MS would use a crappy chip like 6670 for their next BIG console.

You guys have to remember that the Xbox 720 is rumored to be using a SoC design. They want efficiency and lower costs. Publishers want a large install base. The US$600-700 PS3 had a very small install base.

Its going to be good too see how far this $80 graphics card will be pushed in the next few years then, it will probably outperform all of your $500 gtx 580s and 6/7970s by the end of its lifespan thumb.gif

i guess they don't want to produce a $500 console since most people are used to $300 and to get $300 u have to use something of this caliber 6670

Its also the simplest solution. Occam would be proud! thumb.gif

Maybe they meant to say an HD 6770?
Games are optimized WAY better for consoles... Why have a 7970 in a console? Overkill much...
